WOO-HOO! And I was already accepted to Wake Forest Grad School for Fall 2021 anyway; I applied because it was the right thing, never mind the $. However, I am hopeful that NC legislators will come through, rewarding/attracting teachers who seek further knowledge. @SenatorBerger
@BrianBalfourNC This presents a great opportunity for a vetted and careful study: Wake County vs. NC homeschool test scores. Not an equal playing field, but definitely a way to then more closely analyze the variables between the two groups, since this post has grouped them against each other.
@SenatorBerger Who really cares about this identity politics smoke show? Pass a budget; do your elected job. Every day you guys waste electricity in the Legislative Building you are burning taxpayer dollars. Meanwhile, state employees work around you. Shameful.
@greta Not a question, but I will reply that at least we had to write or type words onto paper, requiring our human CPUs to process for that task, copying correct spellings, punctuation, and grammar, all originally written by educated humans who likely specialized in the subject.
ATTN! North Carolina high school students: Wake Forest just launched the NC Gateway program (Fall 2026). Families earning <$200K get tuition‐free & those <$100K get living costs covered, too.
This is what RJ wanted when he moved WF to W/S: to provide hometown opportunity.
Money spent on your education is never misspent money.
If it’s a good education, there are academic lessons learned. If it’s a bad one, there are money lessons taught, hopefully learned.
@SenatorBerger Stokes County has already past its 2nd full week of another great school year. And at my school—Piney Grove Middle—we are exceeding academic growth for the third consecutive year. So while I appreciate “good luck,” we are successful due to will—and that will is very local.
Today began my 8th year at Piney Grove and 8th year teaching. Enrollment is up a double-digit percentage. (How’s that for school choice?) We are the middle school academic success story for Stokes County, NC. Exceeding expectations is what we do. We’ll do it again.
@SenatorBerger A key problem with a two-party system is that it gamifies politics; you bank on that. You encourage your supporters to demonize Democrats as if approximately half of the public is evil. Enjoy your reign while it lasts; younger people are smarter than you and yours.
@SenatorBerger NC’s thriving public schools are due to dedicated workers choosing public ed over income. To maintain excellence, I urge you to re-join the other 49 United States of America and reinstate due pay to master’s degree teacher-experts—which you took away in 2013. Do the right thing.

Today’s NYT includes a persuasive piece: why we should all read (or re-read) The Great Gatsby. Some may consider it too early, but I teach it in my ELA7 classes (via its public domain text, excerpts, the 2017 film) simply because I’m not sure it’s read in high school anymore.

Approximately 13 years ago, this happened. We made a full documentary and had a live string quartet. It was, and remains, amazing.
