Sketch of Demachiyanagi in Kyoto and perhaps the last of this year’s cherry blossom

Perfect weather for it in Kyoto.
A couple of highlights were (1) chatting with a 93-year-old Japanese chap about painting and what Kyoto used to be like and (2) a gaggle of ecstatic kindergarten kids swarming my easel/me before their teacher rescued me.

B&W sketch of the stepping stones at Demachiyanagi in Kyoto
This is down the road from Shōkoku-ji Temple (相国寺), where the Zen monk and ink painter Sesshū (雪舟) trained, so it feels right to paint in B&W around here.

The good folks at https://t.co/p2Af2Vqz4L commissioned me to illustrate Japan’s sun goddess Amaterasu retreating to a cave and plunging the world into darkness. Please have a peek/read if you have a spare moment.

In the most famous of the Japanese stories of the gods, the sun goddess Amaterasu retreats into a cave, plunging heaven into darkness. The other deities gather to try and lure her out.
