“We must picture Hell as a state where everyone is perpetually concerned about his own dignity & advancement, where everyone has a grievance, & where everyone lives the deadly serious passions of envy, self-importance, & resentment”
C.S. Lewis, 29th Nov 1898 – 22nd November 1963
What this letter is really objecting to is prescription of Palestine Action, as is made quite clear in statement “ill-conceived and draconian anti terror legislation”. Signatories think Rooney should have right to fund organisation committed to violent acts to achieve political ends. They are anti democrats. It has nothing to do with free speech. They are calling for the voices of the democratic many to be drowned out by the wealth & violence of the few.
Sir Roger Scruton ran an illegal underground university behind the Iron Curtain in communist Czechoslovakia at enormous personal risk in the 70s and 80s. For this *alone* he was a hero and more virtuous than any other public intellectual or commentator we have now.
Never forget: disorder is bad, the ultimate failure of politics. Riots, political violence, looting, arson: it's not fun. It's not glamorous. It's also almost never the prelude to greater justice or the means of improvement. It's just miserable, for the poor usually most of all
@aimeeterese Kudos for reading all this drivel (100 pages!). Interesting that her metaphor doesn't include stop signs, crossing points or the possibility that someone might step into moving traffic.
Roger Scruton on why so many intellectuals are drawn to the left & what it means to be an intellectual conservative:
“If you start thinking about politics in an intellectual way, you are likely to be on the left, because that provides a systematic solution, an answer to the questions, puts it all in a system, and also gives you a rather dignified and self-congratulatory place in the system.
But if you think a bit harder and longer about it, you’ll move back to what you would have been if you had never thought at all. That’s my view of what an intellectual conservative is: it’s someone who articulates the real reasons for not having reasons.”
This is an excellent article by @NigelBiggar in response to the Guardian's piece on Monday about the campaign against Project Spire. Nigel's article is based on clear evidence and historical knowledge, and I wholeheartedly recommend it. Gift access in next post, do share... 1/2
People are free to have their views on this, one way or the other
But to neglect to mention that Rooney herself has called for a boycott of Israeli authors & books is journalistic malpractice

@Catesby1924@CptHastings1916 Yep, that's the point I'm making. When they were removed post Troubles that was as a tangible sign the bad days were in the past - now similar security structures are the norm in GB.... well, you see the point I'm making.
I'm imagining a student supposedly intelligent and driven enough to receive an education at Oxford, but apparently so stupid they cannot work out the meanings of common English idioms from context and so poorly read that they haven't encountered them in English literature
