Rodri decided to go to Barca in part because Real Madrid let it get that far and should've closed the deal weeks ago. It's a fumble, I don't see any valid excuses for it. What started off as a good transfer window hit a big set back today. You lost a player that would've elevated your midfield and instead he goes to strengthen your biggest league rival.

You have to move on quick though and the bigger question is if Mourinho wanted Rodri's profile in the squad but didn't get him, what's next? Do you hedge your bets leaning on Güler and Bernardo for that deep-lying ball progressor role? Do you go back to the market? This is the same exact scenario the club found themselves in last season. Still not addressed fully.

I also don't fully buy that Real Madrid were 100% committed to Rodri the way some are reporting (though I understand why they have to report that angle). There were concerns about his back surgery / age / ACL / other injuries that added up in the last year. I think they valued him lower than we think. I don't agree with that evaluation. Rodri was needed, not only because he fills the exact tactical profile that you needed, but because he also brings experience and leadership, something else the team desperately needs. Still time to improve before the window closes and I hope Mourinho is in full Chuck Norris mode at the club's offices.

One of the reasons I really wanted Rodri was that, like Kroos, he could have been the organiser/orchestrator, in a nutshell, he could have been the coach on the pitch. Do you know why that’s so important, no only because we don’t have an organiser, but because our coach is Mourinho who has been tactically tragic for nearly a decade. But I’m obviously willing to be proven wrong.
