Straus actually did a ton of philanthropy in the USA, particularly in NYC, and his contributions to American causes came BEFORE his contributions to overseas causes. Other immigrants could learn a lot from his example of giving back to the United States.

In the depression of the 1890s, he funded and managed distribution of food, cheap coal, and soup kitchens. He also funded shelters to help people survive the harsh winters.

In 1898, he donated an ice plant to help American troops in Santiago, Cuba.

When babies were falling ill and dying from contaminated milk, he created the Nathan Straus Pasteurized Milk Laboratory and a network of depots where families could get affordable safe milk. This project began in NYC and eventually grew to 297 depots throughout the USA. He donated the Laboratory to New York State. He also worked on tuberculosis prevention. He also donated to the New York Public Library.

Outside of the USA, he also sent relief supplies to survivors of the 1908 Messina (Italy) earthquake and helped in the rebuilding.

The man was an inspiration and a role model.

Interesting how antisemitism is the only type of hate that the hater gets to tell the victim what does and what does not constitute the hate.

Imagine a white person telling a black person what is what is not racism.

In the years before WWII, the world saw a chilling mix of antisemitic lies, rising authoritarianism, and a dangerous indifference to truth. Today, we’re watching the same storm clouds gather.
•Blood libels are back. From Gaza to campuses, Jews are once again falsely accused of atrocities - organ theft, genocide, even inventing their own suffering. The same medieval lies, now amplified by hashtags.
•Antisemitism is mainstream again. In the 1930s, it spread through pamphlets and radio. Today, it spreads through influencers and “activist” NGOs and by main stream media. From celebrities to politicians, blaming the Jews has once again become fashionable.
•Appeasement is policy. Just like Chamberlain believed he could tame Hitler with paper and smiles, Western powers today believe they can reason with Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran. They call for “restraint” - while terror is rewarded and the victims are scolded.
•Local conflicts are boiling. Back then it was Spain, Ethiopia, Manchuria. Now it’s Ukraine, Israel, Armenia, Syria, Sudan - each one a test the world keeps failing.
•The global order is cracking. Alliances are strained, the UN is paralyzed, and strongmen are filling the vacuum. Just like the 1930s, we are living in the shadow of war without yet calling it one.
•And again, the world watches in silence. Back then, Jews fleeing genocide were turned away from port after port. Today, Israeli children held hostage are met with protests against their rescue.

We are not yet in 1939. But we are deep in the moral fog of 1938.

If history has taught us anything, it’s that ignoring evil doesn’t stop it. It feeds it.

Wake up. Or repeat.

Israeli peace activist Ada Sagi, who was seized from her home on October 7 and held hostage for 53 days in Gaza, said she no longer believes in peace. "I understand that Hamas doesn't want peace," she said.

She revealed that she was moved to different civilian houses in Khan Younis before being taken to Nasser Hospital with other hostages.

She mentioned that students were being paid to watch over them. "I heard them say 70 shekels for a day. It's a lot of money in Gaza because there is no work. And if you have work not with Hamas, it's no more than 20 shekels a day," she said.

The world must demand that Hamas surrender in order to finally achieve peace in the region.

“What Hamas did was unconscionable and reprehensible. The hostages have to be freed. Terrorism must be named and fought by all people of conscience on the planet. There is no excuse for it under any circumstances.  

I stand with the Israeli people and their right to live in peace and safety. At the same time, I don’t agree with all of the Israeli government’s choices on how they are conducting the war. I want the violence to end, and the innocent Palestinian people affected by the humanitarian crisis that has resulted to receive the lifesaving aid they need. And I know that many in Israel share this sentiment.

I believe, as many people in Israel and around the world do, in the need for a two-state solution, one that ensures that the Israeli people can live in peace and safety alongside a homeland for the Palestinian people that provides them the same benefits.

I also see a troubling conflation in criticism of the actions of the Israeli government with denunciations of all Israelis and Jewish people. And as a result, we are seeing an undeniable rise in global antisemitism. I am seeing it myself, on the streets of the city I grew up in. It isn’t right and must be denounced.

Antisemitism must be condemned whenever it happens and wherever it exists. As should Islamophobia and bigotry of all kinds. There is a frightening amnesia for history in the air. We must remind ourselves that we can only manifest a more hopeful, just, and peaceful future by learning from the past.”
