european football has spent the past fifteen years solving futbol like chess.
a generation of coaches optimized for pass completion, pressing triggers, territorial control, rest defense, and positional occupation.
the problem of this is that they optimize for what is measurable. depth, the willingness to attack space early, attempt the difficult pass, dribble past a defender, or deliberately create chaos, is a high variance play. it fails more often than it succeeds. if you evaluate players by completion rate, ball retention, or positional discipline, those actions look like mistakes. so they get coached out. eventually, everyone converges toward the same local optimum.
the game becomes increasingly legible. every team occupies similar spaces, presses in similar ways, builds from the back with similar patterns, and minimizes the same risks. systems become better at defeating other systems, but worse at dealing with players who refuse to behave like systems.
south american football never fully abandoned the duel as the fundamental unit of the game. the 1v1 remained sacred. so did the tactical foul, the unpredictable dribble, and the player willing to lose possession five times if the sixth breaks the match open. the objective was never simply to preserve structure, it was to create someone capable of destroying the opponent’s structure.
football is not won by completing the most passes. it is won by scoring more goals than the other team. those are related, but they are not the same objective.
this is the danger of optimizing proxies. when everyone optimizes the same measurements, they stop optimizing for victory itself. they optimize for looking efficient.
italy may have been the first major european football culture to lose part of its identity this way. its historical advantage was never athletic superiority or perfect positional play. it was tactical asymmetry, unpredictability, and an instinct for making matches uncomfortable. as italian football converged toward the same coaching model as the rest of europe, it gradually surrendered the qualities that had made it different.
the broader lesson extends well beyond football. every optimization process eventually risks becoming self-defeating. metrics become targets. proxies replace objectives. variance is mistaken for error. the outliers capable of breaking the system disappear because the system itself learns to eliminate them.
The Missing Piece in Bengal’s Power Puzzle
#Elections2026 - long note.
Corruption, anti-incumbency, arrogance on the ground, migration, unemployment, extortion, and a chronic lack of development these have been the constants in West Bengal’s political landscape since the late 1970s.
The early years of the Left Front were buoyed by the success of Operation Barga. It created a durable political compact: land reforms in exchange for loyalty. For over three decades, that compact held. But while political stability was achieved, economic transformation was not. Bengal was poor then; large sections remain economically constrained even now. The state effectively revolved and still revolves around one dominant urban centre: Kolkata. Cities like Siliguri or Durgapur have expanded, but beyond their core zones, the structural limitations are visible.
Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee attempted a course correction. He tried to shift Bengal away from entrenched socialist instincts and bring in capital, industry, and investment. But he was undermined by his own party’s ideological rigidity. The Left in Bengal cannot be understood through the prism of Left politics elsewhere , certainly not in contrast with Kerala, where communist governance evolved differently. The two models are fundamentally divergent.
Regime change in Bengal has rarely been incremental. it has been seismic.
In 2011, it took another land movement to consolidate a massive shift. Land once again became the gravitational core around which public anger, aspiration, and political momentum converged.
In 2021, similar undercurrents were visible , perhaps even sharper. Anti-incumbency existed, discontent was real, but it did not translate into regime change.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has emerged as a formidable opposition to Mamata Banerjee. It has successfully identified governance deficits and leveraged central schemes to build its narrative. Yet, it continues to miss a crucial element: Bengal votes for a face, not just for a framework.
In the 1970s, Bengalis rallied behind Jyoti Basu , a mass leader with ideological clarity and political gravitas. In 2011, they did the same with Mamata Banerjee. Leadership in Bengal is deeply personalised; it requires emotional resonance, not just organisational strength.
Suvendu Adhikari, despite his political heft, does not yet embody that statewide, cross-sectional appeal.
There is also a deeper cultural-political layer. Demographic anxieties are real and acknowledged in private conversations. Yet, overtly polarising rhetoric does not easily translate into votes in Bengal. Language, tone, and historical memory matter. For instance, invoking the “Gujarat model” often misfires , not because Bengalis reject development, but because the phrase is filtered through associations with the 2002 Gujarat riots rather than economic growth. Political messaging here demands nuance and calibration.
Understanding Bengal requires engaging with its intellectual and emotional history . How leaders like Jyoti Basu and Mamata Banerjee built movements that culminated in sweeping mandates, not fractured verdicts.
One variable now stands out: the potential impact of SIR (Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls). Its implications in Bengal could be deeper and more politically consequential than in most other states.
A notable shift this time is tonal. There are, so far, fewer signs of large-scale pre-poll violence. Campaigns have been relatively low-decibel, with both sides avoiding the shrill, deeply personal attacks that have defined past elections.
Whether this signals maturity or merely a calm before another decisive churn , remains the central question.
I attended the AI Impact Summit today.
5 made in India AI Products BLEW my mind:
1. EkaScribe: A doctor in a busy rural clinic see 5 patients without touching a keyboard. The AI handles the prescriptions, history, and filing.
2. Ottobots: Made in India autonomous robots that can deliver medicines in hospitals, navigating elevators and cooridors by themselves (no more family members rushing to pharmacies).
3. Sarvam Kaze: Sleek, Made-in-India AI spectacles that "see" what you see. They don't just record - they explain the world to you in your local language via bone conduction like a genius translator whispering in your ear.
4. Sarvam Edge: AI that runs on your phone with zero internet - translates 22 languages in real-time even while you're in a basement.
5. Mankomb’s "Chewie": AI native kitchen appliance that literally eats your waste. It converts wet waste - bones, meat, and fluids into nutrient rich "RegenSoil" in hours using real-time AI sensors.

Why is it that we somehow never manage to give our cricket icons a chance to finish in style! The only modern great who got the chance to go well was Sachin. Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman just quietly left after that 2012 tour of Australia. Then Ashwin in Australia. And now Rohit and Virat, two of India's most successful test captains, who have together led India to 52 test wins will just vanish into the sunset without a final game for their fans to say goodbye.
It's a tragedy!
Indian cricket team:
Ganguly gave it a spine.
Kumble gave it a heart.
Dhoni gave it brains.
And Kohli gave it guts.
Farewell from test cricket, Virat Kohli, and thanks for all the memories.
