It sounds like the syntax highlighting hasn't been enabled for the file. You'll want to enable syntax highlighting via View > Syntax

Sorry to hear you're seeing issues with Markdown syntax highlighting.
Have you tried launching Sublime Text in safe mode to see if plugins are interfering with the default syntax highlighting for Markdown?

To clarify: previously middle-clicking the icon would not create a new window, which has now been fixed.

Note that we also prevent multiple empty windows being created via middle click.
