@elonmusk Slavery was standard practice in almost every known human society until the 19th century, when a movement that originated in Europe (especially Britain) and spread to the Americas succeeded in outlawing the Atlantic slave trade and then slavery itself in Western countries. Many non-Western countries only abolished it in the 20th century, often under external pressure, and pockets of slavery still exist today in Africa and Asia.
The 19th-century Western abolitionist movement was historically exceptional, but it did not βend slavery worldwide,β nor was slavery uniquely or originally a βwhiteβ institution.
