What a humbling recognition to be on @BBC100women list of 2023! A dedication to all smallholder farmers in Africa who have shaped my journey. Particularly women such as my mother, who never give up in the face of insurmountable climate related challenges. https://t.co/rDfYCCJOsb

On the sidelines of UNCCD COP17 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, I held a bilateral meeting with Dr. Susan Chomba of the World Resources Institute (WRI) to explore opportunities to strengthen collaboration on landscape restoration, sustainable land management and financing for nature.
We discussed how to translate Kenya’s ambitious restoration commitments into measurable, investable and locally owned programmes, including the implementation of the 15 Billion Trees Programme. Particular focus was placed on strengthening monitoring systems and datasets to track restoration outcomes, improving access to quality planting materials, and ensuring restoration interventions respond to the priorities of communities and wider ecosystems.
We also explored opportunities to mobilise and better package financing for restoration through the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and other innovative financing mechanisms. We emphasised the need for larger, integrated programmes that build on ongoing initiatives rather than fragmented projects, while strengthening the linkages between science, policy and finance.
The discussions further highlighted the importance of community-based approaches, working with local organisations to strengthen ownership and ensure investments deliver tangible benefits at the landscape level. We also explored opportunities to strengthen Kenya’s institutional capacity to mobilise environmental finance and develop bankable programmes in the forestry, water and landscape restoration sectors.
We look forward to continued engagement with WRI and other partners in advancing high-impact, science-based and community-driven solutions that accelerate Kenya’s land restoration ambitions and contribute to the implementation of the UNCCD and other national environmental commitments.

The young people of this country are the ones that will save this country. Once we return to the values of meritocracy in public service, such talent will not go to waste.
Food security is increasingly being shaped by geopolitics.
🌍Our report The New Geopolitics of Food explores how governments can reduce vulnerability to shocks, stabilise food prices, and strengthen local food systems.

“It’s good for the planet because you’re weaning food production off fossil fuels,” says @suechomba.
As geopolitical conflict sends fertiliser prices soaring once again, farmers from Senegal to India are turning to organic & natural alternatives.

If you are a University lecturer and supervisor of Master’s students, by all means encourage students to learn how to write scientific journal articles but please stop encouraging them to submit such exercises to actual journals because you think it would be a good learning exercise for them. 🛑 ✋🏽 Many/most editors and reviewers provide their time voluntarily as part of their sense of duty to science. It is the job of the paid University supervisor to check the students’ work.
What puzzles me is why a senior University academic would allow their name to be on some of the many manuscript submissions I have reviewed. Did they even read it? Every author must sign that they have read and approved of the final manuscript, so what’s going on?
@USForeignAssist@lindahoguttu@StateDept@IMC_Worldwide Leave Kenya out of this nonsense 🚶🏿♀️

We are aware of the court action filed in Kenya against the Ebola isolation facility. We are in touch with Kenyan authorities and are optimistic we can resolve objections.
Thank you, @LaikipiaW_Forum team, for welcoming & sharing your experience with fellow restoration champions + the incredible work you do. Your dedication & impact truly inspire us. We’re proud to work with you, always.

OMG.
🇰🇪 Sabastian Sawe becomes the first man ever to break 2 hours in a marathon (legal conditions) in 1:59:30 at the London Marathon!

All under the previous WR.
My commentary today: Strait of Hormuz crisis should accelerate Africa’s biofertilizer production, a shift to electric mobility and renewable energy. Fossil fuel, chemical fertilizer & food systems are joined at the hip https://t.co/yIUoafEETs
One day Nairobians are dying in floods the next day the government is destroying forests, the very ecosystems that would buffer us from such disasters. @WilliamsRuto tell your minister for environment & climate change to stop embarrassing you & get serious at least for once.
The problem is not the taxes, it is the fact that we get nothing in return. Health sector is a mess, CBC a bigger mess, roads- potholes & no drainage. Rains are coming. The political class feeds on our taxes like gluttons & displays it arrogantly in our faces. Mtado?
The painful reality of a Kenyan Worker from February 2026
1. PAYE - 30%
2. SHIF - 2.75%
3. H/Levy - 1.5%
4. NSSF - 6%
Total = 40.25%
HENCE, the total tax on payslip is equivalent to 12 days out of 30 days in a month. Thus, for nearly 5 MONTHS, GoK takes your entire salary.
🤔
Waiyaki way before vs now, @KeNHAKenya actually used billions to destroy a beautiful road and it has been under construction for 10yrs with no end in sight and garbage allover @WilliamsRuto@Alfayaz11
Hundreds of thousands of people across Mozambique have been affected by the country’s worst flooding in years. Al Jazeera’s Haru Mutasa is in the southern city of Xai-Xai, where entire neighbourhoods are submerged.
To be clear, “this bargain no longer works” because it’s targeting them.
They had no problem with a false international order that targeted and subjugated brown people.
The old order is gone. Rules based international order was false, benefited some and exploited others. We need not mourn it. Nostalgia is not a strategy. Despair is not a strategy. The powerful have their power, but we also have something, the ability to stop pretending.
For anyone who would like to hear Mark Carney’s outstanding Davos speech in full here it is. This is what true global leadership looks like.
Canada should be immensely proud today, because they are leading the fight back when others dare not.

Even if we deny it, the frequency and severity continues. Some communities in East Africa are fighting drought & hunger, others in Southern Africa are fighting to stay afloat in floods. It’s incumbent on all of us not to give up…not to give in..not to lose hope in the fight.
When and how did Wangari Maathai inspire you? I could tell many stories, but I fell in love with the icon long before she became a Nobel prize winner. When I was a student and she was fighting for our jobs, our livelihoods, our future, in the streets with no fear!
The more you dig around, the more roots you find out.
We had a an amazing kiki session with @suechomba from World Resources Institute about Mama Miti aka Shawry wa Matrees.
