U.S. support for Jamaica’s Hurricane Melissa recovery continues, and Deputy Assistant Secretary (DAS) of State Taylor Garrett (@WHAAsstSecty) saw that work firsthand during his visit.
DAS Garrett saw U.S. government foreign assistance in action through IOM Jamaica and UNICEF Jamaica, including recovery support for communities affected by the storm in Black River and surrounding areas.
DAS Garrett also accepted the @AMCHAMJamaica Eagles of the Americas Award on behalf of the Bureau of Disaster and Humanitarian Response, recognizing the United States’ swift and comprehensive response to Hurricane Melissa. At the gala, he announced an additional US $2.5 million in U.S. foreign assistance for Jamaica’s recovery, bringing total U.S. government support to more than US $24.5 million.
As the new hurricane season begins, the United States remains shoulder to shoulder with Jamaica in advancing disaster preparedness, resilience, and long-term recovery.
The United States today contributed an additional $80M, on top of $32M already contributed, in urgently needed bilateral funds to combat Ebola as we continue to be the leading financial contributor to the vital effort to combat the spread of this terrible disease. President Trump continues efforts through the Washington Accords to seek peace in the region, required now more than ever to enable our partners to operate safely as they work to test, isolate, and treat those impacted by Ebola. We thank our partners in the field and in the Governments of the DRC and Uganda for their partnership in this crucial effort.
In advance of next month’s World Cup, The United States, Mexico, and Canada have announced aligned public health travel measures for individuals coming from African regions at greatest risk from the Ebola virus. Americans and visitors should remain confident that President Trump and his Administration are taking ever step to contain the Ebola virus in Africa and prevent it from coming to the United States.
