I listen to what others are saying. I can say w/ confidence that normal people are very worried w/ disasters, flooding, over-tourism, development, construction, highway making etc. in #Uttarakhand & #Himachal. Centre & states should consider & act on genuine citizen voices!

Māsaka (माषक).

When you say बात सोलह आने खरी है you are actually acknowledging a metric system that has its roots in Chanakya’s Arthashastra or may be even more ancient than that.

Māsakas were Punchmarked coins from Magadha-Maurya Empire (322BCE).

Approx 0.07grams in weight and 4.155mm in size, these are perhaps Ancient World’s smallest coins (see the size comparison with a new 1 Re Coin).

Māsaka derives its name from the measurement term Mash (masha) which means One sixteenth.

In Arthashastra Chanakya mainly mentions Pana and Māsaka as the coins in usage (There was Kakani too). But Māsaka coins were widely in circulation during the Mauryan Empire (more than a Pana or Kakani).

As its name suggests 16 Māsaka made a Pana.

Its interesting to note that this 1/16 division of currency that was designed over 2 millennia ago was still prevalent in Indian Currency, where we would have 16 annas in a Rupee (and call 75 paisa 12 annas, 50 paisa 8 annas and 25 paisa 4 annas.)

Coming back to the coin in hand - Given the fact, of a cash wage of 5 panas a month for the lowest paid, the pana was, indeed, a valuable coin; the kakani and the Māsakas were, perhaps, the coins which most people ever saw or used.

To put things in context, Arthashastra mentions charge for washing clothes (rough white fabric) is one or two Māsakas.
