IME, evaluating on style is softly discouraged bc it can introduce bias. I'm thankful that my own teachers insisted on it. We don't receive much training on how to consult. My coworkers say they struggle to teach passive vs. active voice, let alone the rest, in one consultation.

Cleanth Brooks has this habit of using geometry metaphors to illustrate his points about literature. So, looks like my niche was cornered 80 years ago.

I often hear about the work of a critic being too extreme, lacking in qualifications, and insisting upon absurd notions. Then I read the critic and every paragraph is [hedge] [qualifier] [precise definition]. Ironically, this was my experience with Brooks' Heresy of Paraphrase.

@caitninjacat tbh, it's a little demotivating. When 90% of the class gets an A, it's hard to know if I'm really improving or where I really stand (which makes PhD applications extra scary). But assignments aren't really stressful. My effort mostly goes into producing papers and teaching.
