Interestingly Penguin India has put out an official statement on ‘Belonging’ and un-belonging. The emphasis in the statement is not about a certain opinion that the author (in this case Mrs. Sonia Gandhi) held, but about fact-checking. That makes the whole case interesting. What were the facts that were disputed? Penguin has said they would like to keep the discussion with the author confidential, but would the author also like to keep the disallowed passages to herself and allow speculation and spin to travel in a certain direction?

Besides this, am really curious to know who collaborated with Mrs. Gandhi to write the book? Was it an Indian or a Western ghost😊 Am sure this will come out eventually, but this question is relevant because we don’t know if it is the author or the ghost (writer as well as content advisors) who had a problem with Penguin’s editorial suggestions?

Anyway, this controversy sadly does not make it easy for other Indian publishers of repute to overlook questions raised by Penguin. They too wouldn’t like to suspend or surrender their editorial process, I guess. It will be a travesty if Mrs. Gandhi’s book isn’t published in India in November. @PenguinIndia
