ABUJA IS FLOODING, BUT THE RAIN IS NOT THE ONLY PROBLEM.

We keep blaming heavy rainfall while refusing to confront what we have done to the city.

Green areas, floodplains and natural drainage corridors were created for a reason. Yet some are converted into buildable plots by officials who should be protecting them.

Then come the hungry architects and professionals who know better but betray the environment for a fee, accepting to design and build where they should have had the courage to say NO.

Then the authorities approve developments that should never have passed planning or environmental scrutiny, sometimes because the right pockets have been lined.

And we, the citizens, are not innocent either. We dump refuse in gutters, block drainage channels and treat the environment as though it belongs to someone else.

Water will always find its natural path.

An allocation cannot change hydrology.
An approval stamp cannot stop a flood.
And concrete cannot replace every green space.

Abuja’s flooding is not just a rainfall problem.

It is a planning failure.
A professional ethics failure.
An enforcement failure.
And a failure to respect our environment.

We must do better.
