Monetizing AI is painful, but it doesn't need to be.
Most AI products are infrastructure-heavy and can't rely on subscription-based pricing. Instead, many of these services charge users depending on how much they use the service.
If you use the service a lot, you pay more. If you don't use it, you don't pay at all.
This makes sense. Services like OpenAI and Anthropic AI charge you based on the tokens you use. Many applications do the same with their customers.
An alternative is to charge a flat fee and limit how much customers can use the feature. After you finish your quota, some products ask you to upgrade your plan.
But there's a problem:
These billing systems are challenging and time-consuming to build. Most out-of-the-box solutions in the market do not support these models.
I'd love to hear from those who've done it to understand how long it took them to get it right. I haven't implemented it, but I imagine it's not a piece of cake.
I found a solution for anyone trying to monetize AI products:
The team at @togaihq reached out to show me their platform. If you are building an AI application, you should take a look.
Togai takes care of metering, pricing management, and billing. Their platform supports any pricing model: usage-based, subscriptions, or hybrid.
They have an API and provide an SDK in Python, TypeScript, and Ruby. They have a marketplace where you can build Zapier-like integrations with any application to fetch your AI infrastructure data.
The advantage of the platform is clear: You focus on your product while they handle billing.

Thanks to the @togaiHQ team for showing me their platform and partnering with me on this post.
Many services have come out lately that focus on making AI applications easier to build. This is great, and it's a sign that the field is starting to mature!
What services do you know that will help anyone trying to build an AI application?
