Nairobi 🇰🇪 has been selected to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, bringing the sport’s biggest global championship to Africa for the first time.

Nairobi’s winning bid beat London 🇬🇧, Rome 🇮🇹 and Munich 🇩🇪.

Munich 🇩🇪 was also selected to host the 2031 edition, meaning the championship will head to Kenya in 2029 before returning to Germany two years later.

The 2029 championships will be staged at the renovated Kasarani Stadium, building on Nairobi’s experience hosting major international athletics events.

My heart goes out to those affected and still confused about what immigration laws to follow after yesterday’s deadline. Here is the legal position to help you plan.

If you are a foreign national from an East African Community (EAC) country and intend to reside in Kenya while doing business, trade or working, you can regularise your stay by applying for a Class R Permit.

Go to the Kenya eFNS portal on eCitizen and search for a ‘Class R’ Permit, available to EAC nationals who intend to reside in Kenya and earn a living.

This includes nationals of Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and South Sudan. Somalia is also an EAC Partner State.

The Class R Permit itself is FREE. Meaning, the processing fee and the issuance fee are both 0 (zero).

EAC nationals residing long-term must still fulfil standard Foreign National Registration requirements, such as the annual Alien Card fee, which is separate from the gratis Class R Permit.

Here is what you require:

You will need relevant supporting documents, including a valid passport and documents relating to your business or activity. Requirements may vary by sector. Small-scale traders may also be required to provide a Kenyan police clearance certificate where applicable.

Application Process:

Start online through the eFNS portal on eCitizen.

Where physical submission is required, print your forms and supporting documents and submit them at Immigration Headquarters or designated regional Immigration offices.

It is very important to note that not every EAC national visiting Kenya automatically needs a Class R Permit. EAC citizens enjoy general movement rights under the EAC Common Market framework, but those intending to reside, work, or run a business must ensure they hold the appropriate legal status.

The greatest achievement of the 2010 Constitution was not just devolution. It was the constitutionalisation of public finance.

Public money no longer belongs to politicians. It belongs to the People and must be raised, borrowed, allocated, spent and audited strictly within the Constitution.

When governments treat the National Treasury as a political department instead of an independent constitutional institution, they undermine the very system Kenyans created to protect public resources.

The Constitution is clear. Public finance is governed by constitutional principles, not political convenience. Defending Chapter Twelve is defending the sovereignty of the People. #ReKe #KnowYourConstitution #GetitDone

The law is the law. It does not matter for how long the law has been violated. Article 138(1) & (2) of the Constitution, on the Procedure at presidential election, categorically provides:
(1) If only one candidate for President is nominated, that candidate shall be declared elected.
(2) If two or more candidates for President are nominated, an election shall be held in each constituency.
Voting at elections is conducted as provided under Article 86, which provides:

86. At every election, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries
Commission shall ensure that-

(a) whatever voting method is used, the system is simple, accurate, verifiable, secure, accountable and transparent;

(b) the votes cast are counted, tabulated and the results announced promptly by the presiding officer at each polling station;

(c) the results from the polling stations are openly and accurately collated and promptly announced by the returning officer; and (d) appropriate structures and mechanisms to eliminate electoral malpractice are put in place, including the safekeeping of election materials.

From the law above, there is no way the results for the Presidential elections cannot be announced at the Constituency as required by the Constitution. #ReKe #GetitDone #KnowYourConstitution
