In the ‘80s back in Virginia, a kid got arrested for bashing mailboxes with a baseball bat from a car - ours was one of them. On a rural route so had to replace quickly; new one cost $65 + had to replace 4 x 4 and set in Sakrete. Altogether, the cost was $70 and it took a day off work and 30 miles of driving to find the mailbox and get the parts/pieces/parts, dig out the old one and reinstall the new. Another 15 people on our road had theirs destroyed as well.

This had been going on for years since the last kid was caught. Since the “motis operandi” was the same, the kid was charged and the judge found him guilty of not just that one but all since the last guy was caught. Over 100 in all, at $50 apiece on average. A plea was agreed to for just the last 15mand his father agreed to pay, he was quite wealthy.

The judge said NO. The kid was made to work to earn the money himself, he was a student at a local private school and had been accepted to a fine university the next fall. The father said he would give him a job. The judge said, “NO. At a minimum wage job that I approve of, not with you or any of your friends doing menial labor.” His father said, “but he will miss a semester of college.” “He may well miss a year of college.”, the judge said. “But he will learn much more.”

He gave a similar sentence to a local rich kid who shot a plow horse on a lark and killed it. Valued it at $1500 and the kid had to pay it off from earnings at $1.50 an hour tilling soil. He replaced the horse.
