Andrés Escobar was m*rdered ten days after accidentally scoring an own goal at the 1994 World Cup.
Colombia arrived in the USA as one of the tournament favourites. Pelé had tipped them to win it. They'd won 25 of their previous 26 matches, including a 5-0 demolition of Argentina.
Then they lost their opener to Romania 3-1, a d*ath threat arrived by fax to one of the players, and the camp fell apart.
Against the USA, defender Escobar deflected a cross into his own net. Colombia went out.
Ten days after returning home, Escobar was shot d*ad outside a Medellín nightclub, the gunman reportedly shouting "goal" with each shot.
The k*lling was linked to cartel figures who had lost heavily betting on the tournament. He was 27.
