LLM traffic isnโt a replacement for search yet.
Itโs a new signal of discovery and trust that will only grow in importance.
The brands that start measuring it now will be the ones ahead when everyone else catches up.
๐ A new study of 973 ecommerce sites found ChatGPT traffic appears to convert worse than Google.
That may be true based on the data available, but thereโs more to the story.

For now, LLM visibility is best seen as a form of organic awareness.
The goal is to appear when people ask meaningful questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini, not just when they search in Google
@polynoamial@Wikipedia Good work! Signals a future where data we access is a lot more accurate (providing the research teams can get LLMs to stop hallucinating ๐ )
@harpreetchatha_ AI generated slop will be detrimental in the longer term. If you have an intelligent agent crawling the web for the best answer for the user, that agent will quickly understand slop from legitimate content and mark it accordingly.
With the market presence google has, they have to do something catastrophic to lose their moat, particularly as they have the data and technology to scale in what search will become. It begs the question that if a shift like this and competition from other strong companies canโt knock google, you have to wonder whether it will ever happen.
Here's a statistic that should raise the eyebrows of every SEO professional: 92-94% of AI Mode searches were zero-click searches. Naturally traffic drops are being widely reported or predicted.
This means visibility in AI search is incredibly critical for brands. If your brand isnโt being mentioned or clearly cited, then you could rapidly become invisible.
The thing is, AI search platforms and LLMs operate their own crawlers. These AI search bots have different requirements to Google or other search engines. They won't wait for your JavaScript to load, won't parse your single-page application, and certainly won't tolerate your 4MB hero image.
Therefore, if your site isnโt in top shape and AI-ready, you could be set to lose far more than just rankings. Hereโs what you can do to prevent this: https://t.co/yGeC5kQUX0.

@timsoulo Would be good to know the data at a deeper level here. Is the rise in google traffic because LLMs are querying google several times per search to get the right answer for the user (providing LLM Search tooling is considered traffic?)
@BritneyMuller Would be interested to know where you see search in 2-5 years. There is a possibility here that with agentic models and AI that is more intelligent than any human that new indexing or methods of search are created.
