The vagus nerve, the longest nerve in the autonomic nervous system, plays a crucial role in regulating various bodily functions, including heart rate, digestion, respiratory rate and much more. You can see from the photo how many organ systems the nerve touches.

It helps to control involuntary actions like swallowing, speaking, blood pressure, digestion etc.

Additionally, it plays a role in the
parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for rest and digest responses, helping to calm the body after a stress response.

As we know in POTS the vagus nerve may be dysfunctional and a major player in this can be a virus.

COVID, EBV, chickenpox, herpes, any virus can invade the immune system
And thus get into our nervous system and attack nerves.

If the vagus nerve, or any nerve becomes dystunctional it may under pertorm or over pertorm.

When the vagus nerve becomes inflamed or dysfunctional we start down this spiral of symptoms that we most often see in POTS/ dysautonomia.

The nerve is sending the wrong signals to the rest of our bodies, which is why most of the time our rest/ digest, fight/flight systems are out of wack.
