Yay!
I am so excited about this book! Chock-full of research that tells us what works for improving math fluency (spoiler: not worksheets) & gives us oodles of real-world practices teachers can use in their classrooms tomorrow. 😍 If you care about math fluency, check it out.
Teachers in Harlem thought of ways to chunk kindergarten reading time. Time spent reading isn’t just a reading task, it’s an executive functioning one. Interesting to see student choices and why. #tcrwp
My go to quick debrief question at the end of meetings (Thanks to @brooke_geller). Participants choose one. What’s the version of this for the end of a book with kids? #tcrwp
A2 use what you find out about student interests to “dedicate” read alouds to kids across the year. “This one goes out to Jose because I know he loves to swim!” #tcrwp
A gentle reminder this test prep season that a top influence on achievement is reducing anxiety. Self-care is important—our stress over tests can trickle down to kids. Reduce anxiety by taking care of yourself, showing kids what to expect on the test & teaching calming strategies
A4: this is a favorite new idea I have for assessment. Video booth! Come read a few pages of a book in your best fluent voice (if that’s the focus) or read your writing and name the things you are proud of, or show off your partner reading #tcrwp#wuos#ruos
PRINCIPALS MATTER
Important article: Mayor Rahm confirms what it took me decades as an educator to learn: without empowered principal leadership-which I would add includes literacy knowledge-Ss, Ters & school cultures cannot thrive & sustain gains #litessentials#cpchat#edchat
How often in the adult world is standing stone silent in straight lines, obediently following a single authority a valued norm?
People move about the world with purpose. Perhaps we teach kids to move with self-honor & purpose, too, mitigating hallway 'disruptions.'
Belief: All kids, regardless of their rdg level- below or above “benchmark”—deserve rich literacy experiences— opportunities to be read to, experience great books in company of others, and the joy of talking abt them. Regardless of whether this directly improves level.
