Brian May didn't just donate money to animal welfare. He personally purchased British farmland and forests with his own money ~ and converted them into permanent wildlife sanctuaries. He resigned from the RSPCA for not doing enough. He refuses to play Glastonbury over badgers. The Save Me Trust is not a side project. It is Brian May's second career.
Most rock stars put their name on a charity.
Brian May buys farmland for his.
The Save Me Trust was founded in 2009 by Brian May and conservationist Anne Brummer — originally to campaign against the possible repeal of the Hunting Act in the UK.
It has never stopped growing since.
Today Save Me Trust campaigns against fox hunting, the badger cull, factory farming, live export, trophy hunting, driven grouse shooting, the use of snares, and the captivity of orcas and other cetaceans.
But what most people don't know — is what Brian May has funded personally.
The Save Me Trust manages private land ~ purchased and protected specifically for this purpose by Brian May himself. Land that was previously wilderness-deprived commercial forest or farmland. Enhanced. Restored. Converted into wildflower meadows. Protected permanently.
The Trust operates alongside Harper Asprey Wildlife Rescue ~ which rehabilitates injured British wildlife and releases them back into the wild through secure soft-release sites that Brian May's funding helps maintain.
In 2023 ~ Proud Galleries presented a £5,000 cheque to Save Me Trust ~ generated from ticket sales and book signings at Brian May's Stereoscopy Is Good For You exhibition in London. Every event Brian May does ~ feeds back into the animals.
He resigned from the RSPCA as Vice President in 2024 ~ publicly ~ because he felt even they weren't doing enough.
He refuses to perform at Glastonbury because its co-founder supports badger culling.
He has addressed Parliament directly. Led protests through London. Fronted BBC documentaries. Funded research. Bought countryside.
A man who once played to 250,000 people in Brazil —
Spends significant portions of his personal fortune buying British farmland.
To give Hedgehogs somewhere safe to sleep.
Thank you for caring for the animals @DrBrianMay 🙏.
Freddie Mercury’s passing didn’t mark the end of Queen’s golden era. That true closing chapter came with Made in Heaven, released on November 6, 1995. The album contained the last recordings Freddie made while gravely ill, and it also became the final full-length Queen album to feature bassist and co-founder John Deacon.
In the months after Innuendo was released in 1991, Freddie worked relentlessly to make sure Queen would have enough material to continue. He left Munich for Montreux, where Queen owned Mountain Studios, so he could keep recording during his final days.
Brian May later explained, “I think our plan was to go whenever Freddie felt well enough, to make the most of it. We basically lived in the studio for a while, and when he called and said, ‘Can I come over for a few hours?’ our plan was always to make the most of it.”
Even as his health declined rapidly, Freddie kept recording until September 1991, when he was too weak to finish “Mother Love.” In November, he passed away. It took nearly two years before the remaining members could face working on the material again.
Roger Taylor told Rolling Stone, “I’ve never gotten over his death. None of us have. I think we underestimated how deeply it would affect our lives. For those of us left behind, it’s as if Queen belonged to an entirely different life.”
Where did the songs on Made in Heaven come from?
Despite the heavy emotions behind it, the album became one of Queen’s most uplifting works—far more solid than its predecessor. As Freddie neared the end, everyone knew, and they came together like never before. “Freddie said, ‘Write things for me. Keep giving me lyrics. I’ll sing,’” May recalled.
Not all the songs came from Freddie’s final sessions. Some dated back to The Works era (1984), and others came from Freddie’s 1985 solo album Mr. Bad Guy. “You Don’t Fool Me” was crafted by producer David Richards from leftover fragments, yet the result felt complete and powerful.
The album radiates warmth and hope through songs like “My Life Has Been Saved” (written by John Deacon), Roger Taylor’s “Heaven for Everyone,” Mercury’s “I Was Born to Love You,” and the beautiful “A Winter’s Tale,” inspired by the scenery around Montreux that Freddie loved so much.
Queen’s final No. 1 album
Only in “Mother Love” does Made in Heaven reveal a deeper glimpse of Freddie’s struggle. Lines like “I’m a man of the world and they say I’m strong, but my heart is heavy and my hope is gone” hit especially hard. Freddie never finished the song—Brian May had to sing the final verse after Freddie died.
Made in Heaven became Queen’s fourth consecutive UK No. 1 album, and their seventh overall. Not long after, John Deacon stepped away from the band for good. As his longtime friend Robert Ahwai later said, “Freddie’s death affected him deeply. Maybe he thought, ‘Freddie was the band—what’s the point now?’”

Fans of the iconic rock group Queen were recently delighted when it was revealed that the band's bassist, John Deacon, 73, had reunited with surviving members, guitarist Brian May, 78, and drummer Roger Taylor, 76, for the first time in 30 years. While it wasn't for a return to a public stage, it was simply an autograph session. The trio signed a copy of the album *A Night At The Opera*, which will be part of a silent auction at Freddie Mercury's annual birthday celebration in Montreux. However, it was enough to generate excitement when it was confirmed that it was a fresh, new autograph signed for a good cause. The event is a fundraiser for the charity established in Freddie's name after his death. The Mercury Phoenix Trust confirmed that John had recently agreed to sign the record despite having lived out of the public eye for decades.
Although he still has an interest in the band and has to approve business decisions, he stepped away from music shortly after the death of lead singer Freddie Mercury in November 1991 at the age of 45. His last public appearance with the band was almost 30 years ago, on January 17, 1997, at the opening of the Béjart Ballet in Paris, where they performed "The Show Must Go On" with Elton John. Roger Taylor recalled in an interview: "That was John's last performance, and I could see he wasn't happy because he was chain-smoking and very, very nervous, and he'd been seriously traumatized by the loss of Freddie."
Brian added: "Deacy, our dear friend John, I think he didn't reach the same places we did... John is really very uncomfortable with all of this. You can see how his whole body reacts against it. And in the end, he says, 'I can't do this again. I can't do it.' And it was true; that was the last time John played with us in public."
Brian and Roger have continued touring as Queen with former American Idol contestant Adam Lambert, but John has never joined them on stage.
So what has the elusive bassist—the youngest and always most reserved member of the band—been up to for the past three decades? The answer is, not much rock and roll, as the star has been living a quiet family life with his wife and six children—Luke, Laura, Cameron, Robert, Michael, and Joshua—in London.
Since he still retains a stake in Queen Productions Ltd., the music legend, who penned several of the group's best-known hits, such as "I Want To Break Free," continues to generate income from the band without the need for grueling world tours. In an interview with Mojo earlier this year, Brian confirmed John's ongoing contribution to the band. "John still has a say. We're told he's happy with what we're doing, but he doesn't want the stress of being creatively involved, and we respect that," he said.
He didn't even attend the premiere of the band's biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, in which Joe Mazzello played him, nor did he participate in any promotional activities for the Oscar-winning film. However, it was reported that his son, Luke, had instructed Joseph on his father's mannerisms.
Public sightings of John have been rare, although his address is common knowledge among fans who sometimes gather at his home. In September 2023, one of them knocked on his door and gave him a painting. While, according to social media posts, their interaction with him was positive, many other fans were outraged by this perceived invasion of his privacy.
When John is seen, he seems a world away from his rock star days and is most likely to be found in jeans and a sweater, often smoking a cigarette. His luxuriant curls are gone, and he looks about 73 years old. A fan on Reddit who claims to have met him wrote: “Upon seeing him, I knew it would be extremely awkward and strange to approach him. Not because he’s rude or anything, but because he just looks like any other elderly gentleman living in southwest London. He and his family are very down-to-earth and quite polite… I get the feeling that this whole Queen circus is rather irritating, considering he’s more focused on family life and retirement.”
While this latest contribution to the group is unlikely to lead to anything further, it has given some fans a glimmer of hope that he is finally coming to terms with his legacy.

@firestick_411@BillClinton The imbalance of power between a White House intern & a POTUS should be abundantly clear. She may have consented & been of age & been indescreet, but she didn’t know he would lie about it or be impeached over it, or ruin her reputation & future forever. HE should’ve known better.
@BillClinton I voted for & thought he was a decent POTUS. Like many, I was disappointed by the intern scandal & other rumors of infidelity. The imbalance of power between a White House intern & a POTUS was unconscionable. He not only lied to everyone, he destroyed a young woman’s future.
