Duolingo is not a business. It is an absurdist art project. An app for learning languages that no one actually learns a language from.
Like a restaurant full of people waiting for their food that never comes
@Eva_N_M_ Да бе, 2020 не беше изцапан изобщо... Телевизиите по цял ден бяха на протестите и показваха как едва ли не целият народ е наизлязал заради кюлчетата, а него му се привиждаха дронове от страх...
> Why?
Starting with the strictly false: your brain doesn’t feel sparkly. You, the conscious embodied whole organism, might feel something like sparkly (though I must confess to never having felt this way myself). The notion of your brain feeling something is straightforwardly wrong and beyond that has no phenomenological or poetic purchase.
Second, this is meant to be an explanation to a child as to why they enjoy learning. It’s textbook reductionism, in a bad sense. The right answer is at the level of explanation of (a child friendly version of) “because learning lets you do new things and grow; it is an accomplishment and is good for you”.
Third, even if the right answer was to go down a level or six and discuss the mechanisms of feelings—which, again, is not appropriate here, but one could imagine a different question where it was—one wouldn’t jump to dopamine, which the child has no purchase on. I might start somewhere like “your brain and body have many parts inside that move in different ways when you feel in different ways”. There are many stops on the journey between there and dopamine.
Fourth, this is just a bad mechanistic explanation of the feeling of learning even at the adult level. It’s not simplified, it’s wildly oversimplified, to the point that it’s almost circular. So by using it you’re very slightly acclimating the child to explanatorily empty neurobabble, and more widely to illusions of explanation, from a young age.
