The cheetahs that landed in Kuno in 2022 still thought June was winter. Because in Namibia, it is. Shorter days. Cooler nights. A thicker coat growing in, exactly as their bodies had been doing for generations south of the Equator.
India does the opposite. June is heat and monsoon. Same months, inverted world.
So some of them grew a winter coat in the middle of an Indian summer. The fur held the rain. Ticks moved in. Collars rubbed wet skin. They scratched. Wounds opened. Maggots followed. Three adults didn’t make it.
Nobody had a textbook for this. Not the Namibian team. Nor the Indian scientists. The pineal gland only reads night length.
The ones who lived through a full year began to reset. The cubs born here never had the old clock at all. Thirty-two of them opened their eyes under northern daylight. Their coats, their breeding, their sense of when winter arrives - already Indian.
That is the quiet part of the 52. Not just numbers. A species that crossed the Equator, paid for the mismatch in skin and blood, and then handed a correctly timed body to its young.
Nature is stubborn. It is also faster than we give it credit for.

A well trained lion, well fed for 10 years appears very capable.
But if the circus company closes down and if left in the jungle, the lion cannot survive more than a month.
Because other animals knew how to get their food but the circus Lion did not learn.
A lion left alone, is the king.
When I read this, I am reminded

One area where we need HUGE investment and improvement is: Swimming. Offers largest number of medal after athletics, and unless we crack this puzzle we cant really breach the 150 or 200 mark in future. Its really ironic that a county full of rivers is dry on these medals.

I have always believed that privately funded institutions in India such as the Birla Institute of Technology and Science. (BITS) Pilani can go beyond the public funded higher educational institutions by leveraging on their flexibility in terms of admission, appointment, promotion and other policies. At #BITS, we have modified many of our internal #policies in the last few months in order to put this process in motion.
1. We are aggressively recruiting new faculty with impeccable academic credentials by following a flexible process of appointments. The new faculty #seedfunding has now been revised to go upto Rs. 40 lakhs in #BITS. Our Chancellor Shri Kumar Mangalam Birla has also approved a scheme with a budget of Rs. 15 Crores (USD ~2 Million) per year to fund #Interdisciplinary projects for our faculty. This fund will be used to encourage faculty #collaborations across disciplines. Collaborations are key since #innovation happens at the intersection of different disciplines.
2. We have now revised the #superannuation age for faculty upto 70 years, subject to a review at multiple stages during their career.
3. You will soon see an advertisement for #Professors-of-#Practice recruitments from across the BITS campuses. We are also looking for #senior and #distinguished researchers to join us as #faculty.
4. We have made our #PhD programmes attractive by slashing the fee considerably. BITS provides #fellowships to PhD students and we are also in the process of creating attractive PhD Fellowships with help from our #alumni. We are also entering into agreements with many good undergraduate institutions in the country so their final year undergrads can do their projects in one of the BITS campuses and continue here for their PhD.
5. We are completely revamping our innovation ecosystem in all campuses to encourage more #student and faculty #startups. There will be multiple internal funding opportunities for startups.
6. We will soon be discussing a special PhD Programme in our Senate focusing on #deeptech #entreprensuhip. Idea is to match high TRL projects being carried out in BITS with like minded PhD students with a goal to convert more and more PhDs into entrepreneurs.
7. We will soon be launching an #Endowment fund at BITS. Thanks to the great support from BITSAA International and many notable #alumni in BITS, I am confident this will be a game changer for BITS and will be a model for all privately funded institutions.
8. We are entering into collaborative agreements with leading universities worldwide for increased number of #joint #degree programmes.
Exciting times ahead. Please join hands with us and be a part of this wonderful journey.
