🎄 CHRISTMAS THE HIGHLANDER WAY IN SOUTHERN POLAND 🇵🇱

On Christmas Eve, the mountain town of Rabka-Zdrój became the setting for a powerful expression of Polish faith and tradition. At St. Mary Magdalene Church, thousands gathered for a Christmas mass celebrated in the distinctive highlander style of Podhale.

The church was filled to capacity as around 5,000 worshippers arrived not only for the liturgy, but for something deeper: a living continuation of tradition. The mass was accompanied by Mała Armia Janosika, whose violins, regional costumes, and powerful voices transformed the service into a shared cultural experience.

Highlander kolęda—traditional Polish Christmas carols—echoed through the church, blending sacred prayer with folk melody. This is a form of worship rooted in generations of mountain communities, where faith, music, and identity have never been separate. The sound of kolęda, carried by violins and children’s voices, reminded many that Christmas in Poland is not only a date on the calendar, but a ritual of memory and belonging.

What unfolded in Rabka-Zdrój was not a performance for tourists, but a communal act. Families stood shoulder to shoulder, young and old together, participating in a tradition that has survived partitions, occupations, and modern pressures to standardize culture. In an era when many European churches struggle to fill pews, this highlander mass told a different story.

Christmas in Rabka-Zdrój showed that when tradition is lived—through kolęda, regional dress, and shared faith—it remains strong, relevant, and deeply human.
