The installment of the Battlefield franchise surprised the public when it revealed its First World War setting. However powered by one of the most successful marketing campaigns in gaming history, it became the best selling Battlefield game not beaten until Battlefield 6 nearly a decade later.

Despite the game's historical inaccuracies and liberal use of prototype weaponry that never saw combat, the game caused a revival in interest of WW1 in the United States, where the war is hardly remembered unlike in the Anglosphere and Europe.

The game remains one of the only to represent the Russian Civil War and the Middle Eastern theater of WW1.
