Here’s all of the career pauses I’ve had.
- HS to military
- Military to civilian
- Military was a “gap year” b/c I did not know what I wanted career wise
- 5-6 career type pivots
- voluntary seps.
- involuntary seps (sep pckg.)
- layoffs
- sabbaticals (on 3rd)

I get so tired of the blathering about the duping, the mind virus, or deceit & hypocrisy of the “other side.”
If all of this is on 1 side in some form, a version of it also exists on your end of the spectrum.
If you are at either extreme, you are just as bad as the other.
@charlie_psych Because we can say we are doing these things and it’ll feel like we are working on them…but we are really working on the symptoms from not having aligned the How w/ the Why and What.
@emializh Yep. Take career sabbaticals and get out from under the crushing inertia.
Only then can you start to recreate.
I’m in my 3rd and it’s finally settling into a new place.
@mcuban@elonmusk@nypost What if algorithms are really just shots in the dark about programming promotion & engagement & the owners and programmers don’t really understand their own algos much as they let on?
They would never tell us how much slips thru the cracks.
Plus, the entire gaming of them.
@GayBearRes And what mostly gets discussed in the meetings?
All of the made up command and control business artifacts vs. real world context and conditions.
So we are talking about the artifacts and not the real stuff, which puts us even further off the mark.
@kaseyklimes@ben_mathes Why do any of these choices suggest being depressed?
Any of them simply could be very action-oriented toward discovery and experimentation.
@kaseyklimes But you have to apply the discipline directly to the element that surrounds or involves “high agency.”
“Agency” is primarily a thinking challenge so the only way to work on it is to create space for thinking.
Our prevailing paradigm & model tend to not promote or reward this.
Tech people may want the status quo because they know we’ve bought into the myth that tech can be used to fix anything.
It has accomplished quite a nice model for ensuring repeat business after each implementation barely moves the needle.
@PostPunky@OuroKenobi@pmarca Best answer.
Always love the extremist on one end of the spectrum that thinks that only the opposite extremist mindset is bad.
@BowTiedUM It’s great for ideation. Not so good for the executive functioning required for turning the creativity into a business.
Living this now as I’ve discovered I have a talent for abstract photography after 15+ years of cubicle work.
So many ideas for expanding upon this talent.
I don’t think it matters what you built if the thinking that went into building that thing simply perpetuates what’s always been done.
People will see the size of that built thing and think the builder of it is then intelligent about everything & fall to their knees to worship.
