1. Sepang was Hermann Tilke's first circuit designed from scratch. Shanghai, Bahrain, Istanbul, Yas Marina and Singapore's Marina Bay all came after. The modern F1 circuit template started in Selangor.

2. Nine million cubic metres of earth moved. The grandstand canopies are shaped like oil palm leaves, an homage to what stood there before - oil palms.

3. The 2009 race is one of only six in F1 history where half points were awarded. A monsoon flooded the track after a 5pm start chosen for European TV audiences. Storm risk is part of the attractivenes of Sepang.

4. In 2001, both Ferraris spun off on the same soaked lap. Schumacher dropped to 11th, then lapped five seconds faster than everyone else on intermediates to win anyway. Absolutely legendary stuff.

5. The very first Sepang race in 1999 was settled in a Paris courtroom. Ferrari finished 1-2, got disqualified hours later over a bargeboard measured 1cm out of spec, and Hakkinen was provisionally crowned world champion. Five days later the FIA appeal court reinstated the result. A world title changed hands twice over one centimetre.
