US Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, who is Indian-American, has criticised New Delhi’s removal of more than 133 million people from electoral rolls, expressing support for peaceful Indian protesters who have repeatedly been arrested.

On Wednesday, Amnesty International called for the immediate release of two Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders arrested over “alleged repeated attempts to disturb public peace and violate the law” after gathering at a designated protest site in New Delhi.

“The authorities cannot claim to protect the right to protest while denotifying established protest sites and arresting people who attempt to use them,” said Aakar Patel, chair of the board of Amnesty International India.

“Authorities cannot use the criminal justice system to punish people for exercising their right to peaceful assembly. We call for the immediate release of the CJP leaders and an end to the crackdown on peaceful dissent,” Patel added
