Despite their names, peanuts and coconuts are not true nuts! In botany, a true nut is a dry, one-seeded fruit with a hard, woody shell that does not split open when ripe.

Nuts develop from a single ovary and is often enclosed by a protective husk. Chestnuts and acorns are classic examples.

Peanuts are legumes, closely related to beans and peas, with seeds growing inside underground pods. Coconuts are drupes, or stone fruits, with a fibrous outer layer surrounding a hard shell and seed.
