There are things about the Kikuyu community that you can only truly understand if you are one of them, or at least very observant.

The Kikuyu community never had kings or chiefs in the traditional sense. Instead, they were governed by norms, with elders serving as custodians of those norms. When someone went against the rules, the elders would summon him, listen to him, and charge him according to the norm violated. The usual fine was often in the form of cows or goats.

In such a system, where authoritarian rule was absent, people developed self-control and independence of mind.

From my observation, I relate the Kikuyu mindset to wild beasts in migration: they may not appear to have a single leader, yet they move with natural instinct. In the same way, Kikuyus often seem to respond with a kind of collective instinct. When something is convincing and beneficial or otherwise, they tend to agree in unison, almost subconsciously . That is why if you listen to a Kikuyu in Ol Kalou and another in Nanyuki, it may sound like a replay.

Kikuyus do not simply follow leaders and the leaders must align themselves with the people’s aspirations. That is why there is often a high turnover of leaders in the community, especially those who are not development-conscious.

Kikuyus are not tribal and instead, they look at capacity, competence, and results. You can take that to the bank. If a Kikuyu has to choose between a less capable person from their community and a more capable person from elsewhere, many will choose the one they believe can deliver.

After the 2017 elections, former President Uhuru started going against what many in the community believed in. He abandoned Vision 2030, victimised traders in Nyamakima, Gikomba among other things, and even went after his deputy, whom many Kikuyus had come to support.

Uhuru, as a leader, seemed to misunderstand the community. He may have thought they were sheep who could simply be instructed, but he was shocked.

If you remember the 2022 elections, there was a Kikuyu candidate called Mwaure who, if Kikuyus were purely tribal, would have received overwhelming support. But that was not the case.

The Kikuyu community often votes as a block because of this shared mindset — a kind of collective judgment made at a subconscious level. If Kikuyus are mistreated, they react in large numbers, almost automatically. And if you punish them for perceived defiance, they become even more defiant.

The only time the Kikuyu vote significantly split was in the 1997 elections, when Kibaki and Matiba were both presidential candidates. This happened because, in their assessment, the two men had equal leadership capacity, and they could not easily agree on who to support. In that case, they resorted to geography.

Between 2017 and 2022, the current president was pushed aside by his boss, who preferred Raila without properly involving the community. Matters were made worse because he had previously called Raila a mad man and the community was asking , when did he become sane?

Ruto, being a sharp orator, managed to convince the community that he would be better than Kibaki, or at least equal to him. The community’s love for Kibaki remains strong because of what he did, and they embraced him. They knew he was a Kalenjin, and that was not the issue. They wanted a leader with the capacity to deliver.

The Ruto issue also revealed another important Kikuyu value: they care deeply about justice. When Uhuru started mistreating Ruto, the community had little sympathy for a muthamaki who had gone rogue. Since wao ndio kusema, they decided to teach him a lesson.
