Postdoc in the @WeisLab @OSUIB (previously @BrackenLab) studying symbiosis in cnidarians and algal symbionts | sea anemone obsessed | equestrian on the weekends
Our paper on sea anemone microhabitats is out today! Here is a summary of what we found.
TL;DR Sea anemones create unique habitats that increase the richness and biomass of intertidal animals!

#RockyIntertidal#SeaAnemones provide a unique #microhabitat to various other animals on the California Coast. We found that mobile invertebrate richness and biomass are higher when sea anemones Anthopleura spp. are present

Why are anemones in open habitats to begin with? These anemones host algae that require lots of light to photosynthesize, so being out in the open is important. We hypothesize that the mutualism between anemones and algae may be in part responsible for the resulting habitat.
Mix of good & bad from yesterday’s dive in the Upper #Florida Keys. Good: plenty of #corals looked mostly normal and healthy. Bad: lots of paling, #bleaching, tissue loss, & recent mortality in staghorn especially but also elkhorn, fire #coral totally bleached. It was 31.2-32C.
WHY is the water getting so hot in the Florida Keys and threatening FL's coral reef? It's the Florida Bay problem. FL Bay is shallow so when temps are hot, water is calm, and sun is out, FL bay gets extra hot - think puddle in the sun
Now hiring! Project manager for NSF-funded project investigating long-term effects of sexual selection over time in the lance-tailed manakin. Includes all the things: travel, danger, tedium, amazing animal behavior, health insurance... Details: https://t.co/WYGw5DW1ob
Behold the baby Paddlefish!
They’re yet to grow their “paddles,” zoom in to see how amusingly cool these 10-day-old fish are! https://t.co/EIjRYur9Vh

The #Aiptasia life cycle is closed! A prerequisite to settlement of larvae is actively hunting prey, not #symbiosis. Thus, carnivory likely is an ancestral feature in the cnidarian gastrula life stage: https://t.co/h5nyLDASwY
Check out our study on maternal effects on fitness in Heterandria formosa! Maternal fitness is affected by both the current and the mother's social density environment, and vary by population https://t.co/6TuUypWlME
It's happening - @Maria_Ruggeri55 is defending her dissertation next Tuesday, May 2 at 10a PST! DM me for the link to tune in to an absolute smorgasbord of symbiotic anthozoan datasets
