“Anthropic is a mystery to me. I've never, ever seen a company that is both leading their field and the most negatively outspoken commenter on what they do.
And my initial theory was the regulatory capture theory. Quite frankly, I think they're very close to achieving that.
But then they just got so loud that I've literally, in the past 30 days, read everything I can about Anthropic, and I've come up with a new theory.
I call it the Dr. Frankenstein theory.
The more I dig, I've met people who, I dare say, think it's their responsibility, and they're excited about, building a species that's superior to humans.
Dario wrote this blog post called ‘Machines of Loving Grace.’ It was based on a poem.
The last stanza of the poem says, ‘I like to think of a cybernetic ecology where we are free of our labors, and joined back to nature, returned to our mammal brothers and sisters, and all watched over by machines of loving grace.’
Sounds like an overlord to me.
And then in Dario's post, he says, ‘It could be a capitalist economy of AI systems which then give out resources to humans based on some secondary economy of what the AI systems think makes sense to reward in humans…’
So I don't think they think they're writing software. I think they're midwifing a deity here.”

When I founded my first start-up, you had to be crazy to be a founder.
Venture capital was thin, the odds were so low. You barely knew anyone that really did it. Maybe you knew 1 or 2 successful founders.
When I started investing, you still had to be pretty crazy.
Tough to raise a Series A, too few VCs interested in enterprise, few strong exits and few IPOs to point to.
Today, you almost have to be crazy >not< to do a start-up.
This has unlocked so much value everywhere. It’s also made seed investing actually harder. You can’t just assume they are The Crazy Ones anymore. The ones that will always walk through walls, whatever it takes.
The Merely Very, Very Smart can easily get funded. That’s great. It’s not enough though.

The best pitch test: can you tell this at a bar to a friend?
Not the market size, not the TAM, not the deck. Just the story. Why you built it. What you saw that nobody else saw. What happened.
If you can't tell it naturally over drinks (or it would feel weird to your friend and they would think "this isn't you"), your idea or pitch or endeavor needs to bake some more.
The 9pm-at-a-bar test for your startup idea is a defining authenticity test. And without that, nobody will buy your product, let alone come work for you or invest.
That's every business today.
I just interviewed a CEO who said three things that blew my mind:
1. We replaced our $600K Salesforce contract with a vibe-coded CRM, built within 3 weeks.
2. We will get rid of 80% of the SaaS we use internally.
3. If Anthropic doubled pricing, we would not change usage in any way.
@lennysan this is a very bold statement to make. But the points made are actually great to support this.

This is one of several reasons you shouldn't drop out of (or skip) college to start a startup at 18. Founders who do that tend to match the second paragraph rather than the first, because they haven't had time to have the "earned insight" he describes.

This is the truth founders need to remember.
Every era creates an “inevitable” giant.
Then a startup comes along with a sharper insight, a faster product loop, a better distribution wedge, or a completely different way of seeing the market.
The dominant company usually wins the current game.
Startups win by changing the game.
That is why innovation never dies.
Every generation has a company that seems inevitable. Microsoft in the 90s. Google in the 2000s. Facebook in the 2010s. Anthropic/OpenAI now.
It always feels like it's different this time. It never is.
Startups always find a way.

But also, a reframe: there is value in building the cerebellum. It's offloading boring tasks into reflex so the complex thought can focus.
Your mortgage gets paid by a standing order, not a committee. The things that are not fun, not interesting, but have to be done? Done. Most agent frameworks will fail because they treat all cognition as high cognition.
The winners will nail the boring stuff first.
