Inflating the boats

People often ask me how the smugglers actually inflate these boats.

A compressor? Some specialist equipment?

No. In my experience, and from what I’ve personally witnessed, they use the kind of basic foot/hand pumps you can buy from pretty much any outdoor or camping shop.

I once watched two migrants buying four of them at once. At the time I barely paid attention to the pumps because I was more focused on the large number of lifejackets they were buying alongside them.

I’ve also had these pumps thrown at me from boats on the water — poor aim, thankfully — so I’ve seen first-hand that they’re being carried and used.

Sometimes the reality is far less sophisticated than people imagine.
