#Annamalai seems to understand one thing clearly. In politics, making the most noise doesn’t always mean you are winning. Sometimes, it is about staying patient, building your base and being around when others start losing steam.

He also seems fairly confident that #Vijay is here till 2031, and that his own time will come.

Taking shortcuts may help for a while, but it won’t build a party. So the focus now seems to be on strengthening the ground, bringing up local leaders and staying in the fight.

By the 2027 Maanaadu, one full year of groundwork would be done. TVK too would have completed a year, and by then the initial excitement and honeymoon period would start wearing off.

That is when politics gets real.

Most developed countries follow this very strictly, and this is something we can easily enforce, but theatres owners are more interested in money than moral.

A debate between Annamalai and Smriti Irani on their respective BJP journeys would be fascinating!

Annamalai joined BJP because he entered politics with PM Modi as his inspiration. Almost immediately after joining BJP, he was given both prominence and a powerful position in Tamil Nadu politics. But after six years, he left BJP citing ideological differences and started his movement, We The Leaders. His exit and disagreements with BJP’s leadership have been widely discussed.

Smriti Irani, as I mentioned in my quoted post, has had a roller coaster ride within the party. She was defeated in 2014 when she contested against Rahul Gandhi. She then did outstanding groundwork over the next five years and made a resounding comeback in 2019 by defeating Rahul Gandhi. Since then, things have not always gone her way, but she stuck it out, and today she has made a remarkable comeback.

Ever since Annamalai left BJP, he has been hypercritical of the party whose ideology once matched his own. On the other hand, Smriti Irani has continued to back her party, as one would expect from someone with strong ideological moorings.

Annamalai can speak with facts and data, although some of his claims have been challenged at times. Smriti Irani can blunt any argument through her clarity of thought and her stupendous command over English.

Now imagine the two of them debating their respective journeys with BJP. I am sure it would be both interesting and intriguing.

One walked away from BJP. The other stayed, endured and fought on. Put them on the same stage, and the debate could be explosive!

To me, this clash is still quite hypothetical.

2029 maybe little too early for Annamalai , and by 2034 Modi may not even be in the picture. So I would not frame today’s political choices around a conflict that may or may not happen years from now.

Even if it does happen, I think we need to look at it through the lens of federal democracy, not individual leaders.

For the Centre, national security, geopolitics, India’s multi alignment strategy and the overall direction of the Indian economy matter enormously. A strong national economy matters to every state as well.

For Tamil Nadu, the priorities are different but equally important. We need leadership that can keep TN among India’s top states in manufacturing, education, safety and economic opportunity, while seriously addressing issues such as drugs and governance. At the same time, that leader should be mature enough to support the Centre when it is right on national issues and oppose it when Tamil Nadu’s interests are genuinely compromised.

That is not a contradiction. That is exactly how federal democracy is supposed to work.

The Centre and the State are two engines of the same flight. If one fails and if one fails it impacts the other.

Many of us have voted differently in Assembly and Lok Sabha elections before, and we can continue to do so. There is nothing intellectually inconsistent about that.

The question should not be whether #Modi wins or #Annamalai wins.

The question should be whether the people win, whether Tamil Nadu wins and whether India wins.

Sometimes, what looks right in the short term makes the long run much harder.

The Annamalai–Modi Question WTL Cannot Avoid.

I keep hearing a particular position from many WTL supporters:
“We will support Annamalai in Tamil Nadu and Modi in India.”

Emotionally, I understand the sentiment.

But politically, I think this could become a major strategic contradiction.

Because the question is not about personalities.

It is about political architecture.

Annamalai has increasingly positioned himself as someone who wants to build a political alternative in Tamil Nadu — and resigned from BJP because he merely do not want to stay as another BJP leader defending whatever the national leadership decides.

His politics appears to be moving towards a very clear proposition:
Tamil Nadu's interests first.
Tamil Nadu's political leadership first.
And accountability irrespective of which party is in power.

That is precisely why his recent comments about Gujarat-centric development created such a storm.

At the India Today Tamil Roundtable, Annamalai questioned the concentration of development and investment around Gujarat and argued that Tamil Nadu should not be expected to simply accept Delhi-centric decision-making.

The reaction was predictable.

Some BJP supporters attacked him. Some WTL supporters defended him.

But many people found themselves in an uncomfortable position:
How do you defend Annamalai's criticism without appearing to criticise Modi?
And how do you defend Modi without appearing to undermine Annamalai?

That is the real political problem.

Now imagine the next stage. Annamalai launches his own political party.

That party would obviously have its own symbol.
It would contest Tamil Nadu Assembly elections and it could contest Lok Sabha elections from Tamil Nadu.

And its objective would presumably be to win power in Tamil Nadu and have more representation in Lok Sabha for Tamil Nadu.

Now suppose BJP also contests the same elections either independently or in alliance with some state parties.

Then the question becomes unavoidable:
Where will the WTL vote go?
Annamalai's party?
Or BJP?

You cannot solve that question by saying:

“Annamalai in Tamil Nadu, Modi in India.”

Because elections don't work on two separate emotional compartments.

For a Tamil Nadu voter, the same political choice can carry both a Tamil Nadu dimension and a national dimension.

If Annamalai's party and BJP become electoral competitors, if eventually they do, then a person cannot simultaneously give the same vote to both.

That is where today's apparently simple formula could become tomorrow's biggest dilemma.

And there is another important point.

If Annamalai genuinely believes that BJP should be treated like any other political party in Tamil Nadu — whether DMK, AIADMK, TVK or anyone else — then WTL supporters should actually welcome that position.

Because accountability cannot be selective.

If DMK makes a mistake, question DMK.
If AIADMK makes a mistake, question AIADMK.
IF TVK makes a mistake, question TVK.
If BJP makes a mistake, question BJP.
And if Annamalai's own party makes a mistake someday, question Annamalai too.

That is not betrayal.

That is democracy.

In fact, that should be the standard of a genuinely new political culture.

This is where I differ from the “Annamalai + Modi” formula.

I don't think the question should be:

“Whom do I love more — Annamalai or Modi?”

The question should be:

“What political system do I want to build?”

If I believe Modi is the best leader for India, I can support Modi nationally.

If I believe Annamalai is the best political alternative for Tamil Nadu, I can support Annamalai in Tamil Nadu.

But I should also be intellectually honest enough to accept that these two political parties may one day collide electorally.

And if that happens, I cannot hide behind the comfort of today's slogan.

I can’t defeat my own leader by saying I will vote for Annamalai for TN Assembly and vote against Annamalai for Lok Sabha.

I will have to choose.

Therefore, WTL supporters have a strategic decision to make.

Is WTL supporters ultimately:

1. Support Modi and BJP nationally, while supporting Annamalai in Tamil Nadu?

Or

2. Support Annamalai's political journey both in Tamil Nadu and nationally?

These are two different political positions.

They may overlap today.

But they are not necessarily compatible tomorrow.

And that is why I believe WTL supporters should think beyond personalities and immediate emotions.

Because politics is not about deciding whom we support today.

Politics is about asking:

“What happens when the people we support today stand on opposite sides of the ballot paper tomorrow?”

That is the question WTL supporters should start answering now.

Not emotionally.

Politically.

I believe the TIME has come!

When national parties’ priorities differ greatly from local needs, there is no middle ground. He fought internally, then left to walk his own path.
