The Ottawa Tamil Association (OTA) expressed profound gratitude to Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown @patrickbrownont , Brampton City Councillors, the National Council of Canadian Tamils (NCCT) @ncctonline , and everyone involved in this significant project.
We unveiled the Tamil Genocide Monument in Brampton — a powerful symbol that has been constructed by the National Council of Canadian Tamils (@ncctonline) in remembrance of the victims of the Tamil Genocide being committed by the Sri Lankan state. This monument serves as a place for Canadians to come together to commemorate and memorialize the Tamil Genocide. It also allows the Tamil people to share their painful traumatic experiences and to educate others about the Tamil Genocide. Despite various attempts of Tamil Genocide denial and distortion, foreign interference and attempts to silence us by the Sri Lankan state, we stood firm. In Brampton and across Canada, we stand with the Tamil people.
I would like to thank the @ncctonline, the Brampton Tamil Association, Mayor @patrickbrownont, and all those who fought to ensure our stories are never forgotten.
As we continue to call for justice for these atrocities, let us stand strong, and let us stand together.
Today’s opening of the Tamil Genocide Monument in Brampton marks a significant moment in our collective history.
This monument stands as a memorial to the thousands of innocent lives that were taken during the Sri Lankan government’s genocide against the Tamil people.
In her closing remarks, Rugsha Sivanandan of NCCT said the pursuit of the Eelam Tamil right to self-determination will continue.
The song “Nampungal Tamil Eelam Naalai Pirakkum” - believe it, Tamil Eelam will be born - was played to conclude the ceremony.
Anu Sriskandarajah, Toronto District School Board Trustee for Ward 22, said that the monument is a “testament to show that we’re here to stay and that we will continue to believe in our cause.”
“I hope that kids come here on school trips and learn about our history,” she went on to add.
A great milestone in our journey toward justice for the Tamil Genocide. One day proper memorials shall stand in Eelam, honoring the victims and helping families heal old wounds. Heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped make this possible #TamilGenocide@TGMonument@TheThanigasalam
