@ShallowStateOp@DoodleSnark Thanks. But of course it would. At the margins people respond rationally to incentives. So subsidizing debt encourages more debt. Same with mortgage debt. It creates a huge distortion.
@ShallowStateOp@DoodleSnark That means not using tax policy to encourage certain activities with exemptions, credits or deductions, and not using it to punish other activities with punitive tax rates, etc. So that's one thing. Another thing? Simplicity. Every credit, deduction, exclusion creates complexity.
Trump: If we had an honest election, I would have won California. I got millions of votes, but I would have won California if that were an honest system. I would have won
We've never had any politician in high office repeat obvious lies as often and as blatantly as Trump does. It doesn't even draw attention any more. We have become numbed to it. Thanks, Republicans, for this erosion in the common good.

The models from Roxy Music's 'Country Life' are shown 38 years later alongside the iconic album cover. Eveline Grunwald and Michael Karoli's sister, Constanze Karoli, appear in a 2011 photo from a Bryan Ferry exhibition. The women don’t resemble 60-year-olds.
Every day, hundreds of times, doctors ease patients into death with high doses of morphine. I watched it--I advocated for it--with my own father. Can someone explain why it isn't as simple as that?
@ShallowStateOp@DoodleSnark I could make 20 more points why tax deductibility for interest paid on car loans for American made cars is bad policy, but I'm not going to bother further.
@ShallowStateOp@DoodleSnark The tax code should not encourage anything, or discourage anything. It should not favor home buying, and it should not favor marriage. Government policy should be neutral and tax policy should be as simple as possible so it can be as fair as possible.
@ShallowStateOp@DoodleSnark Politicians use the tax code to buy votes. Trump used the tax code to buy votes in 2024. Paxton's "plan" is using the tax code to buy votes. Complexity in government is a subsidy for corruption and cronyism. And no one has demonstrated that more transparently than Trump.
@ShallowStateOp@DoodleSnark I've specialized in tax policy for 30+ years. A book could be written about why this is bad policy. In a free society with equality under the law, government policy should always prioritize neutrality. Shouldn't encourage certain legal activities and disfavor other activities.
@rjrusak One of my favorite podcasts, listening two nights ago, 42 minute episode, had three (!) blocks of commercials, three commercials in each block (that's 9), the blocks were identical. Six commercials for social casinos and three commercials for female desire enhancement. I quit.
@ShallowStateOp@DoodleSnark If you mean from me, you should consider the possibility that I don't spend 100% of my time on X. Jeez. You can't wait more than 1 hour for a response?
