📢Antarctic Campaign 2024-2025
The team at Deception Island, led by Rute Cesário & Catarina Louro (IST), aimed to study Hg cycles linked to volcanic activity🌋. During the field work they collected soil/water samples from geothermal sites for microbiology & Hg/MMHg analysis🧪
📢Antarctic Campaign 2024-2025
The team at Livingston Island, led by Joana Baptista & Marcelo Fernandes (IGOT), concluded the following activities:
🔹 Maintenance of PERMANTAR observatories📉
🔹 Reinstallation of the ERT system at Reina Sofia⚡️
🔹 DGPS surveys at Hurd Peninsula🛰️
PhD student Henrique Zilhão (CQE/IST) participated in the 16th International Conference on Mercury as a Global Pollutant (#ICMGP2024) held in Cape Town, South Africa. He presented the poster entitled "Mercury in Permafrost Soils from the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica."
Gonçalo Vieira (CEG/IGOT-ULisboa) was nominated as vice president of the International Permafrost Association during the #ICOP2024. His nomination is a recognition of the strength of the research on permafrost conducted by Portugal in Antarctica and the Arctic.
The coordinator of @ProPolar, Gonçalo Vieira, was interviewed for @Antena1's program Tik Tak, where he talked about the Portuguese Polar Program, the scientific research developed in Antarctica, and the COASTANTAR Expedition.

#THAWIMPACT embarked on a journey aboard El Doblon for the COASTANTAR Expedition⛵. #PERMANTAR observatories were visited, water and soil samples were collected and UAV flights were performed. Despite time constraints, we proudly report that tasks were successfully completed🎉.
The #THAWIMPACT team departed from Hurd Peninsula aboard the sailing vessel El Doblon for the #COASTANTAR expedition, concluding two intense weeks in Juan Carlos I @utm_csic. They are now set to sail ⛵️ south to explore the ice-free areas of the Antarctic Peninsula.
Joana Baptista and Henrique Zilhão are in JCI(@utm_csic) until the arrival of the sailing vessel for the @COASTANTAR expedition. Throughout the past week, they visited the rock glacier to conduct surveys using DGPS. They also collected water/soil samples.

Before arriving at the Juan Carlos I, Henrique Zilhão and Rodrigo Dias spent one week at the St. Kliment Ohridski Station 🇧🇬. During their stay, they collected soil and water samples🧪to trace specific elements and microorganisms. They also supported the #PERMANTAR network.
The #THAWIMPACT team was reunited at Hurd Peninsula🏔️. In the initial days, harsh meteorological conditions led to delays in the planned activities🌨️💨. However, the team managed to visit Reina Sofia to conduct the maintenance of the installed ERT system.
