My visit during the 2022 floods will stay with me forever.

That tragedy showed the world a profound injustice.

Ladies and gentlemen,
As-salam-alaikum.
Thank you. Shukriya.
My gratitude runs deep.
I am profoundly moved by this high honour.
I accept it on behalf of the women and men of the United Nations – serving around the world, including here in this great country.
I am nearing the end of my tenure as Secretary-General – and I was determined to make one last visit to Pakistan.
I have been a frequent traveler here going back to my days as UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
Through the years, I have seen the hospitality of the Pakistani people as you provided refuge to millions.
I have seen your solidarity and resilience as you confront the brutality of terrorism.
I have seen the heartbreak and devastation of epic floods and a climate crisis Pakistan did virtually nothing to cause.
I have seen the heroism and valor of Pakistani women and men serving as UN peacekeepers around the world.
I know the real Pakistan because I have seen the real Pakistan.
And so as I thank you for the award you bestow on me and the United Nations.
I want to also thank you for what you have given to the world.
I think the great poet-philosopher of Pakistan, Allama Iqbal, put it best.
He was speaking of individuals, but he could just as well have been speaking of a nation when he wrote the following:
“Build, with your handful of dust, a body stronger than a fortress,
And inside this body, let there be a heart that feels sorrow,
Like a stream flowing by a mountain.”
This is how I see the people of Pakistan.
A country of strength. A country of determination. A country of compassion and heart.
On behalf of a grateful United Nations, I thank you.

میں جلال پور پیر والا سے فیصل موورز کی بس میں سوار ہوا، سفر اپنے معمول پر تھا کہ رات ایک بجے کے قریب فیصل موورز کا عملہ دندناتا ہوا بس میں داخل ہوا اور ایک غریب مسافر کی نشست پر جا کر چڑھ دوڑا۔ وہ مسافر اور اس کا 10 سالہ معصوم بچہ رات ساڑھے آٹھ بجے اوچ شریف سے اسلام آباد کے لیے گاڑی میں بیٹھے تھے، جنہیں کاؤنٹر پر باقاعدہ تسلی اور طے شدہ معاملے کے مطابق ٹکٹ جاری کیا گیا تھا۔ مگر آدھی رات کے سنسان پہر بس عملے نے ان پر 1500 روپے کا اضافی چھاپہ مار دیا اور بچے کی ہاف ٹکٹ کے نام پر غنڈہ گردی شروع کر دی۔
جب اس بے بس باپ نے کہا کہ کاؤنٹر پر تمام بات طے ہوئی تھی اور اس وقت میرے پاس مزید پیسے نہیں ہیں، تو عملے کا فرعونانہ رویہ دیکھنے والا تھا۔ عملے کے بندے نے سیدھی دھمکی داغ دی کہ 1500 نکالو ورنہ بچے کو لے کر اسی وقت اتر جاؤ، اور تمہاری پرانی ٹکٹ کے پیسے بھی ڈوب گئے، ایک روپیہ واپس نہیں ملے گا۔ آدھی رات کو ایک باپ کو بچے سمیت سڑک کے رحم و کرم پر چھوڑنے کی یہ کھلی بلیک میلنگ کس قانون اور اخلاق کے زمرے میں آتی ہے؟
اس کھلی ناانصافی اور غنڈہ گردی کو دیکھ کر مجھ سے رہا نہ گیا، میں نے فوراً مداخلت کی، میری مداخلت پر عملہ مجھ پر غصہ کرتے ہوئے وہاں سے نکل گیا۔ اگر اس وقت میں مداخلت نہ کرتا، تو آج وہ غریب باپ اور معصوم بچہ آدھی رات کے اس سنسان اور خطرناک راستے پر سڑک کنارے اتار دیے گئے ہوتے۔
اگر کاؤنٹر والے نے کوئی غلطی کی تو اس کا تاوان سفر کے دوران ایک غریب مسافر کو سڑک پر پھینک کر وصول کیا جائے گا؟ فیصل موورز کا یہ رویہ مسافروں کی عزتِ نفس پر کھلا حملہ ہے۔ اس واقعے پر فیصل موورز کی اعلیٰ انتظامیہ اور ریجنل ٹرانسپورٹ اتھارٹی کو فوری ایکشن لیتے ہوئے ذمے دار عملے کے خلاف سخت ترین قانونی و ڈسپلنری کارروائی کرنی چاہیے
