#OTD in 1568, the Counts of Egmont and Horne were executed on the Grand Place in Brussels. They were leading noblemen in the Habsburg Netherlands but were accused and convicted of high treason.

This is Arthur von Eppinghoven, an illegitimate son of King Leopold I of the Belgians. He died in 1940, 75 years after his father and was Leopold's last surviving child. He was buried at the cemetary of Laken, close to the Royal Crypt where his father was laid to rest.

Albert II, former King of the Belgians - he abdicated in 2013 - is one of the last surviving participants of the coronation. He was 19 years old when he represented his brother King Boudewijn in Westminster Abbey.

Op deze dag in 1953 werd Elizabeth II in Westminster Abbey gekroond tot koningin. Zij besteeg de troon nadat haar vader, George VI, in 1952 was overleden. De kroning vond pas een jaar later plaats. Het was de eerste kroning ter wereld die op televisie werd uitgezonden

Je kan niet “streng maar rechtvaardig” zijn zolang er geen rechtvaardige regels zijn. We hebben een kader nodig voor legale economische migratie - een combinatie van een individuele tijdelijke arbeids- en reisvergunning - dat naast het asielrecht een tijdelijke reis- en verblijfsvergunning geeft.

Zolang dat er niet is, duwen we mensen net richting de smokkel. Terugkeer is het sluitstuk van een geloofwaardig migratiebeleid, niet het startpunt.

Great podcast! Two remarks: Marie Depage was Dr Antoine Depage’s wife (not daughter) and the de Croy family was very posh. In the 16th c. a de Croy even served as godfather and tutor of Emperor Charles V (and many were a member of the Golden Fleece) @holland_tom @dcsandbrook

#OTD in 1983, Prince Charles of Belgium, Count of Flanders, died in Oostende. From 1944 till 1950 he served as Prince-Regent of Belgium as his brother King Leopold III was not able to return to Belgium following WWII.

Ik bén vóór #erfenisrechten binnen de totale belastingmix. Maar leg ze dan op de 3% zoals bij schenkingen: een soort efficiënte transactiebelasting ipv een facto onteigening.
Geld is immers geen “coupon” die de overheid arbitrair toewijst; het is de vrucht van eigen werk en productiviteit.
Je kleinkinderen daarmee kansen geven is niet immoreel; maar inherent menselijk.
