Mahatma Gandhi's rules of engagement: "If slapped, offer the other cheek to be slapped."
Indian Air Force rules of engagement: "Do not slap until slapped."
Pakistan Air Force rules of engagement: "If you see someone coming towards you with the intention of slapping you, rush forward and slap him so hard he loses the will to slap you."
That’s what Pakistan Air Force did to Indian Air Force fighter aircraft deployed against Pakistan right from the start of Operation Sindoor, which commenced at 1.05 am on May 7.
In yesterday’s press conference, IAF’s Director General of Operations Air Marshal AK Bharti said “We were targeting their terror sites and not their military.” He appeared annoyed and surprised with the Pakistani response.
Bharti sir what were you expecting? Pakistan would sit silently while their territory was being bombed at multiple places.
You should have expected them to come at you aggressively with everything in their arsenal. After Balakot strike, PAF attacked in broad daylight the very next day. Didn’t you learn anything from that?
Why didn’t you expect PAF to follow the same rule book they followed on February 27, 2019 this time too with new surprises up their sleeve?
Did you think Rafales gave you such an edge that they would render PAF aircraft and response ineffective? Did this result in complacency setting in?
Then why were you not prepared to face Pakistan counterattack the minute Operation Sindoor commenced? This lack of preparation and vague rules of engagement cost us 5 aircraft on May 7, including 3 Rafales, the pride of IAF.
PAF started preparing for engagements like this with a laser focus on Rafale right after February 27, 2019.
For 6 years they prepared hard. They acquired J-10Cs along with PL-15 long-range air-to-air missiles, enhanced their early warning, electronic warfare, electronic intelligence capabilities and reworked tactics. Then they wargamed all possible scenarios. They carried out numerous exercises validating their tactics. Come May 7, they were ready to wreak mayhem.
Bharti sir you said all pilots returned. That’s good. But how many returned with their aircraft and how many without?
Indian Air Force needs to be more aggressive in future engagements with Pakistan Air Force.
Be like PAF.
If something like Operation Sindoor needs to be conducted in the future, first the whole Pakistan airspace needs to be sanitised. Ground-based long range SAM systems like S400 along with air superiority fighters armed with long-range missiles have to take out as many aerial targets like combat aircraft, AWACS, EW, ELINT, refuellers as possible.
Only once air superiority has been achieved should ground targets be engaged.
