Last of my twittering for this #MusicHallVarietyDay is this little sketch capturing the essence of my music hall ancestors James & Lucy Allison dancing at the Orpheum in Los Angeles in 1895 (via Library of Congress collections). #CherishArchives
In the early 1890s baby frocks were fashionable apparel for ladies on the stage and especially in the ‘halls. Minnie Palmer, Marie Lloyd, Vesta Victoria wore them for their comic songs but it became popular for a time as costume in various colours. #MHVD2024#MusicHallFashion
This is one of my most treasured possessions, an evening bag belonging to my g-g aunt, Daisy Dormer. I know it went to a Water Rats Ball or 2. My sister & I used to have it as part of our dressing up box when we were little & it was woefully mistreated #mhvd2024
@TLegmania@musichallsoc Dan led a celeb music hall cricket team for charity fundraising. They chose outlandish costumes like comic cops for example. The giraffe does seem a bit random tho! They played teams around england I assume Ogdens used his high profile image to either help charity or shift fags!
For #musichallvarietyday#mhvd2024 here is a piece I wrote in 2016 for the 'Snapshot' column in The Guardian about my grandmother Norah, the inspiration for my interest & research into #musichall Her stories enthralled me as a child & continue to do so.

Kicking off #MHVD2024 with this Tom Browne sketch of Charles Morton as “father of music hall”. Used for the cover of 1904 testimonial fund matinee for his widow at the Palace Theatre, on Shaftesbury, attended by the great & good. A dazzling list of performers
@heathertweed@VictorianWeb @drchrislouttit And yet here we are in 2023 still having to fight for decency and humanity for the homeless. We need those illustrators, artists and editors to keep recording history 👋
Thanks so much to @UniKentArchives for their help this week. What a treasure trove for #MusicHall and #Pantomime researchers. The Max Tyler collection was a treat
This weekend, our 1st conference titled "How The Music Hall Worked; 1840-1918" will take place. The event is sold out & sure to be a success - hopefully to be repeated! We hope to have some live tweeting during the weekend. Keep an eye out...#musichall
A potted social history inside a #MusicHall programme. It’s April 1902 and you’re selling furniture on Westminster Bridge Rd. The coronation of Ed VII is in June so you flog your stock cheap & sell tkts to view the procession. At last minute the Coronation is postponed to Aug🤴🏻🤦♀️
My granny used to go to the Willesden Hippodrome in the 1930s. Located in Harlesden, the Frank Matcham building opened in Sept 1907. The hand painted souvenir cards given by Alec Hurley who starred at the opening and left for America shortly after with wife Marie Lloyd. #MHVD2023
@monomaniablogs It had various incarnations as a movie house and back to musichall then was bombed during the war. The indomitable Arthur Lloyd has the story https://t.co/23Nfq9fyR6
