People often claim that if COVID had never of happened, we’d currently be playing GTA 6. However, I completely disagree with this point of view.

For context, RDR2 was in active development (not counting pre-production) for 5 years. Rockstar began working on it properly in 2013, and the game came out in 2018. And even with those 5 years, they BARELY got the game out of the door in time. It was delayed twice, and the immense crunch time that the devs had to undergo in order to meet their deadlines has been well documented. It took 100+ hour work weeks to make it happen. However, there was immense backlash to this after RDR2 launched, which as a result led Rockstar to improve the work culture within the company a ton for GTA 6’s development.

Now, we know that GTA 6 would have entered full, active development in around 2018-2019. Either just before or just after RDR2 released. We know that GTA 6 certainly isn’t going to be any smaller than RDR2, but even if they had followed the same development cycle as RDR2, completely ignoring COVID, that would have resulted in GTA 6 releasing in Fall 2023.

Therefore, 2025 seems like an entirely reasonable timeframe for a game as large as GTA 6. It will be much larger and much more ambitious than RDR2. So I think that the extra two years can simply be put down to two reasons:

- The elimination of crunch time
- The game being much larger in scope compared to RDR2

I just can’t see how COVID would have been more impactful and a better explanation. I truly believe that COVID isn’t the reason why GTA 6 has taken so long to release.

@GameRollGTA Look man, I actually appreciate this post as it offers a lot of insight, not to mention it's actually true, but most people are still going to blame GTA V Online and Shark Cards for GTA VI not being available rn. They'll never get it through their thick skulls, no matter what.
