Our three Grand Divisions are a marvelous peculiarity of Tennessee, a limited model of regional representation that gives republican virtue a (small) leg up over the raw majoritarianism which is otherwise the rule of our age.

The thing people should know about the TN flag is that it represents that TN itself is, in itself, a union of 3 parts, the 3 “Grand Divisions.” This is not just symbolic, the Grand Divisions are inscribed in TN law and applied to things like our courts’ organization.
