Everyone seems convinced they are living through uniquely stressful times. They are, in fact, living through the most comfortable era in human history, and the gap between those two facts is quietly ruining them.

Look at what you actually woke up to. A warm bed, a roof that held, a tap that gave clean water without a three mile walk to a well, a fridge holding more calories than a medieval village saw in a week. No plague at the door, no army on the ridge, no steward come to take a third of your grain for a lord you never met. The chance that you or anyone you love dies this year of an infected cut is, by the standards of almost everyone who ever lived, a rounding error.

Now measure that against how you feel. Wired, braced, worn out by things that have not happened, a generation with heating and antibiotics and same-day delivery, privately certain it endures the hardest conditions anyone ever has.

The truth is less flattering, and facing it squarely is the whole point. Our ancestors carried far more stress than we do, and carried it better, and the reasons we cannot are worth naming plainly.

The first is diet. Most people run on a blood sugar rollercoaster and a low simmer of inflammation, so the nervous system is already jangling before a single real problem arrives.

The second is lifestyle. We have stripped every scrap of deliberate hardship from ordinary life, so the first genuine difficulty finds a body that has never once been asked to cope.

The third is the strangest. We have taken to adopting every disaster on earth as a personal emergency. A famine two continents away. A feud between strangers. An outrage you will have forgotten by Friday. You pour a finite store of nervous energy into all of it, then wonder why nothing is left for your own life, the small handful of things you could actually change.

The Stoics drew a tight circle around that handful: your judgements, your effort, your conduct. Everything outside it, which is very nearly everything, they treated as weather. Have opinions about weather if you like. Try to be personally responsible for it and you go straight under.

Here is the part they leave off the posters. All three causes are yours to reverse. You can eat the way people ate before any of this. You can put hardship back into your week on purpose. You can let the planet's misfortunes carry on without your sponsorship, because they always would have.

You were not born fragile. You were softened, slowly, by decades of comfort doing exactly what comfort does. Seeing that plainly is the first honest thing you can do. Owning it as yours to fix is the second, and the whole business starts turning the moment you stop waiting for someone else to start it.

In light of the Supreme Court today affirming that Texas (and other states) have the prerogative to ban MEN IN GIRLS’S SPORTS… I thought it’d be a good time to remind everyone that the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) is a taxpayer-funded liberal extremist organization that lobbied AGAINST the bathroom bill and to allow men access to little girls’ bathrooms in public schools.

WORSE… If your public school board is a member of TASB (most are), then your school board trustees forced YOU to pay for their work lobbying for men in girls bathrooms.

If the fact that your property taxes funded liberal lobbyists to advocate for men in girls’ bathrooms, then tell your local school board trustees to LEAVE TASB!!

Taxpayers have to be the only people in America forced to pay for something, watch someone else take credit for it, and then get lectured for not being grateful enough.

That is the entire “you didn’t build that” scam.

You paid for the road.
A contractor built the road.
A crew poured the asphalt.
A trucker hauled the materials.
A private company made the equipment.
An engineer designed the project.

Then some politician waddled up with scissors, cut a ribbon, smiled for the cameras, and acted like he personally invented transportation.

Same racket with schools.
Same racket with firehouses.

Same racket with bridges, dams, rail, utilities, emergency services, and every other thing the left points at while yelling, “See? Socialism!”

No, you jackass.

That isn’t socialism. That is taxpayers funding infrastructure, private industry building it, workers maintaining it, and government arriving at the end to steal the family photo.

The left’s genius is turning your money into their moral authority.

They tax you, regulate you, waste half of it, outsource the hard work, slap a government plaque on the finished product, and then tell you your success belongs to them because “we did this together.”

Funny how “we” always means you pay, someone else builds, and they get the applause.

Obama’s “you didn’t build that” was not a rhetorical mistake. It was the ribbon-cutting fraud exposed in broad daylight.

My grandfather, communism, and the tremor that never left. A story I rarely share.

He was the principal of a private school; respected, steady, a man who believed in books and order. Then, one ordinary afternoon, his world ended.

A squad of communist troops stormed on to campus grounds. They herded the children out like cattle, set every book ablaze in the courtyard. “Less educated people are easier to control,” they believed.

They dragged my grandfather and his staff to the side of a dusty road, forced them to their knees, hands bound tight behind their backs. One by one, the executions began. The crack of pistols split the air. Each body fell with a heavy thud into the dirt. Each crack of the pistol meant it was getting closer to his demise.

My grandfather stared straight ahead as the man beside him collapsed. He felt the warm steel of the pistol press against the back of his skull. Time slowed. This was it, the final second of his life.

Then, fate intervened. He lifted his eyes and saw a column of troops marching down the road. At its head walked a general. A childhood friend.

With a scream of desperation, he called out his name. The general was startled but recognized my grandfather and immediately spared his life.

Tears streamed down his face. His entire body shook violently as he sprinted home. He grabbed his wife and children with nothing but the clothes on their backs and fled that very hour, leaving behind their home, their belongings, their entire life.

Everything was taken away by the regime in a single afternoon.
From that day forward, an uncontrollable tremor gripped his right hand. It was particularly noticeable whenever his emotions got the better of him.

The shaking never stopped. It followed him across oceans and time until the day he passed.

That is communism.

It is not theory, not idealism, but the pistol at the back of the head, the burning books, the shattered lives. Do not let anyone sell you a nightmare dressed up as a wonderful dream.

The people now sowing socialist and communist poison in America are exactly what President Trump warned: the greatest threat to our free world.

On this 250th birthday of the United States, let one survivor’s grandson say it plainly and without apology:
