On May 8th, the day after my defense, I walked. My chair, Dr. Dorinne Kondo, couldn’t make it, so I was hooded by Dr. Janet Hoskins, who sat in my dissertation committee. It took me a while to let everything sink in. It’s still hard for me to believe it’s finally over.
After spending 9 years in grad school, one of the most valuable takeaways is that taking the ethical implications of our work seriously is everything. Many of us want to be a hero by creating new knowledge, but few realize that we can also be complicit in destruction.
Sounded like me 7 years ago before I started my PhD. According to my peers & committee, my dissertation is novel in the field, but whether it makes real contribution to humanity is up to the world to judge. I was just trying to reach the finish line in one piece. #stayingalive
Why would someone doing a PhD argue the novelty of your research topic is not important? Like, what are you doing? The point of a PhD is to contribute to humanity's set of knowledge.
Just because it’s novel, doesn’t mean it can contribute to the greater good of humanity. There’re many researches out there for the advancement of technology without taking into account the ethical & moral consequences of the invention. No need to look too far back in history.
The UK government has revoked the student visa of Dana Abuqamar, a Palestinian law student and leader of the Friends of Palestine Society at the University of Manchester, following her speech in a university demonstration. Abuqamar said that her visa was revoked on the grounds of 'national security', with authorities citing her as a risk to public safety.
Abuqamar revealed that she had lost at least 15 relatives in Gaza when the Israeli army bombed a three-storey building in the besieged enclave.

On Friday the American Studies and Ethnicity Department sent this letter to USC’s President Carol Folt and Provost Andrew Guzman to decry the University’s response that has unleashed violence upon the students and faculty who are peacefully protesting against Israel’s genocide of Palestinean people in Gaza.

Have any R1 tenured scholars written publicly about the moral injury of running PhD programs -- mentoring, supporting, encouraging fantastic students -- knowing that the jobs have dried up?
