The Oxford comma is the final comma before "and" or "or" in a series. It keeps items from blending together.

Example: We packed snacks, maps, and rain gear.
Without it: We packed snacks, maps and rain gear. That second version can look like maps and rain gear are one combined item.

Practical tip: If a list has three or more items, place a comma after the item just before "and" or "or."

Clever trick: Read the sentence without the last comma. If two items suddenly look like they belong together as one unit, add the comma.
