We’re going to be advocating for 1) info about Go Slow zones on the subway and streetcar systems 2) a project to eliminate Go Slows at intersections and switches 3) upgrades to dual blade switches 4) upgrades of control software to include positive feedback of switch position
(1/3) Subway service on Line 1 between Lawrence West and Wilson stations will operate on a single track today due to structural maintenance.
⚠️Service will continue at slower than usual speed
🚆Trains will be delayed up to 25 minutes between stations
🚌Shuttle buses will operate
@larrylarry@_ChanFace It also reduces the signage requirements which reduces complexity and cognitive load.
In many cases the transit signals could be moved to the nearside and right next to the drivers stop position. Which would further simplify drivers sight lines.
Wish Ontario/Toronto would fix this and go full bar…
Current system is confusing to 1) computers 2) drivers 3) transit drivers (that first one will eventually cause us big problems)
It’s also really bad to only include turning - because they can be used to indicate successful switch position (ie straight/left and right) - which would reduce the need for stop/check on streetcars.
Drivers could set and ensure switch position prior to the intersection…and stay at speed for straight movements…
In general, the people in charge don't know what ETCS is, or why they need it...and they are mostly busy dealing with the best way to spin the news that they almost crashed a train (more than once)...which they kinda understand as something that could have ruined their day...
GO Transit is supposed to be deploying European Train Control System (ETCS) across its network to avoid accidents like this, and allow more frequency.
Instead rollout has been severely delayed, and does not seem to be a priority for @Metrolinx.
A new report is renewing calls for stronger rail safety measures after more than 400 GO Transit passengers narrowly avoided a catastrophic train collision in Burlington, Ont., in 2024.

The TTC Board seems to have stymied @BradMBradford platform doors motion from last month at council.
Instead of developing a 10 year funded plan, we will be developing a 10 year *costed* plan - which is essentially what we have now...an unfunded plan...
Funding where possible indicates to staff that they should deprioritize this project...
This likely means we won't see any platform doors built...and we won't get any proposals for how to fund them going forward. This is a backwards way of saying they don't want to get creative with funding, and will wait for the province or federal government to mandate them, or give them money to build them.
No way to operate a safe system.
Today, #TTC CEO Mandeep S. Lali and COO Fort Monaco detailed upcoming subway repair work on the Spadina side of Line 1 that will eliminate four reduced speed zones by June 9.

@RM_Transit In many cases congestion charges would just help the streetcars get to the lights faster. Where they would then wait for longer…
Need to move away from fixed loop priority devices and more
priority that works in more situations.
#TTC Line 2 closure (Jane to Ossington) update: crews are making strong progress on track switch replacement at Keele. Overnight, the old switch was removed and the new switch installed. Today, teams are installing new rails and switch components. This is critical state‑of‑good‑repair work to keep service safe and reliable.
@CapMetroATX@CLondoner92 ✅ Slow down boarding
✅ Create longer dwell times at stations
✅ Extend total trip times
✅ Require more buses to service the same amount of riders
MTA bus fare enforcement “EAGLE teams” have begun to conduct some fare inspections on moving buses — departing from the MTA’s longstanding, frustrating practice of forcing riders to wait on stopped buses while fare inspectors check one-by-one if they paid. https://t.co/h01rRTU1HT
We've been told by transit professionals that Free Transit isn't possible...it won't work...it will become a tragedy of the commons...
But everyone knows it works...they just don't want to pay for it...but when it's built into the price of other stuff it's fine...
Steve is getting fed up…the maintainer is failing us…
Next term of council the board is going to have to come to terms with how to deal with line 5/6 going forward. Needs much more visibility and clarity as to the issues that will be fixed and what we are going to have to live with.
