Gatekeepers DO Get It Wrong.

A few months ago, I entered a Big 5 contest accepting unsolicited manuscripts. They liked my concept, requested a full—then rejected, saying my writing couldn’t “compete” with bestsellers.

They act like they can predict bestsellers, like they’re all-knowing. They’re not. I’m not competing with bestsellers—I’m competing with the same non-BIPOC authors getting deals.

As Saul Bellow says, rejection teaches you to trust your own judgment—and to say ‘to hell with them!’

It’s no secret that the #TikTok ban isn’t just about “national security.” Let’s call it what it is: a power grab by Silicon Valley giants like Mark Zuckerberg and Google. These companies are threatened by TikTok’s meteoric rise and engagement numbers, so rather than innovating, they’ve leaned into lobbying and fear-mongering to try and monopolize the social media market.

Let’s not forget Zuckerberg’s repeated attempts to buy TikTok. When that didn’t work, he conveniently championed “security concerns” while rolling out copycat features on his platforms (Reels, anyone?). And Google? They have just as much to gain by seeing their main competitor taken down. This isn’t about protecting users; it’s about protecting their profits and maintaining dominance.

By supporting the ban, they’ve positioned themselves as the only options, stifling competition, creativity, and opportunity for smaller creators and entrepreneurs who rely on TikTok to thrive. This isn’t just anti-competitive—it’s anti-consumer. When the market is controlled by a few powerful corporations, innovation and freedom suffer.
