@DrPhiltill This is a really interesting discussion. How much do you think it will help to have the landing engines higher up on the lander (ie. Starship HLS) rather than at the bottom? I’m assuming it will still be pretty intense w/out an atmosphere to slow exhaust gasses?

@Joffan7 @The_Stossi28 @Yrouel86 Exactly this, although I would add that, to the FAA, safety-critical refers to public safety, not the safety of a hypothetical crew. TPS is still not safety critical unless reentries are over populated areas.

@KenKirtland17 Nowhere does the FAA say that TPS is safety critical. They are just saying that it would require a license modification if it were safety critical (as it should). TPS is likely not safety critical until reentries are over populated areas.

@The_Stossi28 @Yrouel86 Columbia had crew on board and was reentering over populated areas. Starship is reentering over the ocean, and (obviously) has no crew. The FAA is only concerned with public safety, so until Starship reenters over a population, TPS is not safety critical.

@Astro_Chuck This was brought up in a press conference- need pivoting seats for reentry, suit umbilical hookups and extra life support capability if I remember correctly. They decided to keep it simple since they will still have a normal crew size on ISS w/ Sunni and Butch IIRC

@KenKirtland17 @Cosmic_Andrew1 Any failure/deviation from expected performance could be a public safety issue if it happened at a different time during the flight. They should absolutely have to prove that it won’t before they fly again. Hopefully it’s a quick process.
